Weird AC Smell

I've been having problems with my AC. Whenever I turn my AC on when the car is idling the alternator charge drops from between the M and the A of normal to the O and R. Along with that the AC puts out a weird smell. It kind of smells like maybe somethings burnt or some type of fluid. This only happens when stopped or when going slower than 10mph or so and whenever I get going 30mph or 35mph the smell goes away. Any ideas as I am stumped.

Most likely, the smell is still present above 30-35mph, but you are going fast enough that it gets blown away before you can smell it.
As for causes... if it smells more like hot brakes or a hot clutch, then it is probably the compressor clutch slipping. If it smells more like a burnt electrical smell, like a burnt electric motor, the it's probably the compressor coil burning up.
Those are the most likely causes anyway.
