Ok on my 89 it has the 3G conversion, and battery is in the trunk.I dont drive it often. So i have noticed that when i drive it the gauge reads fine (1/2 way) but then sometimes when i go to start it it cranks over very slow almost to where it barly barly starts, like the rrr......rrr.....rrr then it fires. The gauge reads good still and alls fine. This usually happens after i drive it.If it sits for a few hours or more it starts just fine.Any ideas? It is a new battery but since it sits for periods at a time between driving it could the battery just be dead? But then that dosent make sence cause if it sits it usually starts fine!Just when i do drive it it cranks over very slowly!BUT also like i said the gauge reads fine, even though it cranks very slowly.........Now another question diffrent stang. It's my DD 4 banger.I washed under the hood yesturday, well now the gauge reads low volts. The lights are as normal,it starts as normal everything electrical is as normal.Plus the stock alt is less then a year old!It has never done this untill i washed under the hood.So could it be just water got in somewhere?I'm gonna give it a few days and see how it goes.peace

Mustang number 1 = Likely corroded battery terminals, wiring, or connector.

I recently had these same sysmptoms.... thought that either the battery or alt was going bad. I'd shut down the car and it would start all slow or not at all until I'd waited some minutes before trying again. It was lame... I cleaned up the battery terminals and all was good.

Mustang number 2 = I like your current plan

Do you have LT's?

Have you driven the 4 banger since it was washed?
The belt might have simply been slipping after the wash.

Mustang 1) had this prob on my car. Starter was the issue. Tested fine when I took it to the part store so I cleaned all the grounds ran new cables and leads and no change. For giggles I replaced the starter and no more hard starts.

Heat soaked starter?
this could be???I will get a starter heat shield blanket

This is a thought as well? As far as the DD ithe alt took a **** just that fast!Or from washing the engine off?Weird cause i wash the engine off every ten times or so when i wash the rest of the car.. peace

I bought a f150 with a 460 in it. When it was cold it would fire right up. When it would warm up it would crank hard and not want to start...the timing was way off. Just a thought.
