Weird heavy wobbling in steering when cornering

I have been having some intermittant problems in the steering when cornering (68 factory P/S).
Sometimes when loaded up in a corner, going over a bigish bump when cornering or if I "slalom" the
car I can end up with a very noticable wobble in the steering. It seems as if the one wheel that is
bumped/etc starts wobbling harmonically or something, and that it goes away after the load comes off
the wheel or I straighten up.

The first time it happened it scared me quite a bit as I was going at a bit of pace around a long corner and all of a sudden this wobble starts up - I thought a wheel was going to fall off or something, however there is no wheel bearing play.

This wobble provides very heavy feedback through the wheel and is obviously not a good thing - does anyone
have ideas as to what might cause it, and what I can do to fix it?

If all the steering components are in good working order, tie rods, center link etc, I was considering the steering box play as a possible source. Do you have power steering?

What are the alignment specs you are running?

Lastly, what tires and rims are you running?

COULD BE YOUR FRONT STRUT (RUBBER BUSHINGS) OR ALSO COULD BE ONE OF THE UPPER OR LOWER BALL JOINT... OR THE UPPER A ARM WHICH ALSO HAS RUBBER INSERTS.

Could it be that when turned you get enough bumpsteer on one wheel to make your toe out too much, which could start the front end darting left and right?

I dunno how you can tell these things, my car is too busy bouncing like a go-kart over the roads we have around here to notice anything else.

The wobbling can happen when cornering on a smooth road which is why I can work out that its not just bad road.

14inch rims 60 series tyres.
Running 2.5 deg neg camber 2.5mm toe in
with RRS Struts (no UCA)

Also happened when running 1 deg neg camber 1/16 toe in when running 1.5 in lowered, shelby dropped standard suspension.

Consequently Im pretty sure its somewhere in the steering system but not sure where to start looking. I am running 1968 power steering with a flowtech P/S drop bracket (don't know if this would make a difference)

Hmmm

As 12sec67 mentioned, did you have the upper and lower control arms looked at?

If all checks out there, consider testing play in both the steering box, and the power steering center link, ram cylinder, control valve parts.

Well I have discovered what the cause of the problem. When the shop put on the drop bracket for the flowtech exhaust one of the bushes was not replaced properly.



This resulted in the PS shaft levering against the bracket instead of pivoting, eventually (less than 500 miles) ripping the mounting bolts through the chassis rails, as well as bending and tearing the bracket itself.





Now I am going to have to have the chassis rail fixed before I can drive the car again. Reminds me why I almost always DIY, because this is what happens when you take it to incompetant shops.
