Weird Idle Problems, 98 4.6

just cleaned my throttle body, and i blew some cleaner into the egr hose as well. WHAT IS IN THAT BLACK BOX ON THE HOSE BEFORE THE MODULE ON THE TB?........Anyways i idled it for a bit to burn the cleaner off, and then went to the house....about an hour later i had to go somewhere........stang drove fine there, then on the way back as i was coming to a stop sighn the throttle seemed to stay open around 1500rpms even when i was stopped. it idled down soon after stopping,,,,,,,,at the time i thought i gad my foot on the accelerator and the brake at the same time as i was wearing my work boots. anyways it did the same thing as i pulled up to the house, and then it stayed idling high, loping from 900 to 1000. whats the solution for this? the tb was very dirty. do i need to reset the cpu? unplug the maf?

*sigh* Another cleaned-the-throttle-body-now-the-idle-is-messed thread. This should be stickied or something...

You probably wiped away the elastomer seal from the throttle body which is now allowing excess air to leak around the throttle plate. causing the hanging idle. If the PCM doesn't re-learn the closed-loop idle soon you may have too large a leak for it to compensate. You may have to adjust the throttle stop screw down a bit to see if that helps.

FWIW, my 2002 Ford Workshop Manual states pretty emphatically: "CAUTION: The throttle body bore and plate area have a special coating and cannot be cleaned."

The "black box" has nothing in it. It's basically a muffler to keep idle air noise from coming out the air filter housing.

Throttle bodies don't need cleaning unless a mouse has built a nest up against the plate. A film of oil isn't hurting anything, nor is it impeding flow.

thats a very interesting concept. i noticed i large buildup of deposits in the ring where the butterfly valve stops and figured i would clean it. i owned a 97 crown vic and installed my brothers stock intake plenum and tb from his 02 gt. i probably cleaned it 20 or so times while i woned it and it never did that. same with the stock tb on the crown before the change over. i even bored out the little lips in the tb on both sides. never a problem. weird. i will drive it tommorow to work and see if it still persists. how long before the relearn?

it appeared to relearn. runs great. kept up with a new camaro today on the way home. would have beat him but i had a 250 lb coworker with me and a battery for his caddy in the back. lol! we were neck and neck the whole way but we both let of at 90 over the top of the hill.
