Weird problems at idle....

I have had an odd intermittent situation with my vehicle at idle. This usually happens after I have come off the interstate or when i decelerate to a stop. I will bring the car out of gear and into nuetral and the rpms will stay at 2000+ as if I am on the gas. It may do this consecutively for a while or just happen once and stop. Whenever I turn off the car and restart it, the problem seems to go away for a while.

Has anyone experienced any similiar problems or have any suggestions to ratify the problem.

My old stang may have a head gasket problem, but seems like the newer ones have alot more quirks, which would drive me mad. . I would say its running rich if the idle is staying. It's probably just an electrical flaw. Did it just start doing this???

I believe its supposed to do this....its electronically controled to come back to idle slower....wish I could remember why but it has something to do with maintaining proper air/fuel ratio. I'm pretty sure this is normal.
