welding....not real easy, my poor roller perches

well about 4 years ago i spot welded in some floorboards in my last 69. that was the first and last time i touched a welder until today. i figured it couldnt be too hard, so i went to the on base hobbie shop to mig weld up my roller perches($5 for half hour with the mig, good price!). needless to say, it went ok , i'm just pretty imbarrassed to show the pics. remember it was my first set and only the second time ive welder, so please dont laugh too hard. pointer would be nice......

who wants to see pics?

Eh. As long as it hold, right. I just bought one of those small welders from home depot. I built a ladder for my dad's deer blind. Well I havent welded since 10th grade. But At least the ladder held up after iclimbedit, jumped on it, and threw it to the ground.

That doesn't look that bad. Slap some paint on it and pop the bearing in and no one will ever notice the welds. It's not like they have huge blobs and welding wire sticking out of them

Not bad.

Maybe crank up the wire speed a bit and keep moving the arc.

Practice along with experimenting with wire speed and voltage does wonders.

Doesn't look THAT bad 'specially for your second time welding, but could definitely be improved.

What it really looks like is the wire speed probably wasn't correct. I always look for that perfect bead that lays down nice and smooth. From the time you pull the trigger until the time your done, the wire shouldn't "kick up" at you.

This may be a dumb question. Are the roller purches better than using stock or Poly? Do the roller ones squeak at all any fear of the welds breaking? Is it that much better than stock.

Well, the thing is loaded in such a way that the welds are very lightly stressed anyway. It'll be fine. I'd suggest going to the metal supply place, getting a bucketful of scraps for free or cheap, and spending a bunch of time practicing and experimenting. You can read up on technique on the web or in books and use the voltage/speed chart that came with your welder, but in the end it's like dancing: you've got to get out there and step on some toes if you want to learn.

I think it looks great. Just steady your hands a little more. Try bracing them on eachother as you move the tip and try to keep a consistant distance from the piece. The more you drink the sloppier your welds are going to be too. Have fun. I have 3 pair I still haven't finished myself. Did you size the inside of the tubing to fit the bearing yet? It's easier to do before the welding. Have fun.

Wont welding it distort the ID? I would think you would want to bore it after.

They look fine. My first set didn't look any better. Practice will do wonders for your welds.

I size the tube before and a little after the weld. The tube does shrink some but not much. I make the bearing a loose fit before the weld and then do some clean up after the welding.
