I just bought a 8.8 for my capri that was supposed to have a whining noise. It has 3.73 gears. I found these 2 pieces in the bottom of it when i took the cover off. Anybody know what these are? They are not very accurately machined. Both are not the same size. The guy said the trac-loc still worked too, it had just developed a whine when accelerating so he just put a new rear in it.

Any ideas would be helpful so I can get it taken care of.

They are not the ears. All the ears are there. You are able to see those with the cover off. Plus they are not machined well enough to be that type of part. I saw this posted on foureyedpride once, but nobody had an answer.

I just did the same with an 8.8, and had similar items in the oil when I drained it.

They turned out to be the ears off of the traction lock clutches, as someone else suggested.

A long shot is a chip off of a gear, but those don't look like that.

They are the ears. They may not have come off that carrier, But that is the only thing that looks like it in the rear end. They look like they have seen alittle gear to gear action. Thats why they dont look the same. you should have 3 on one side.

were yours all the same size? These are kind of thick. The clutches are black arent they and have have 4 ears on each side. If so their all there. they are even no matter what way you look at the diff. 4 at each corner where they show.

Ok it has been a while, lol
there are 3 or 4 packs in each side, I can not remember how many there actualy are, I have seen those get into the pinion cavity and just sit there, where did you find them in the rear end?

I feel sure that is what you are looking at. I have seen that alot. I worked for Ford for quite a while and now work for Mazda, I have seen both of them do it, The only thing that I an think of is that It just didnt come off that carrier. Maybe it was replaced under warr and they didnt take the peaces out and once you moved it they fell out of the pinion oil cavity and that is how you found them under the ring gear.

Possibly. Anybody have a pic of what a stock locker looks like? This one has an s spring across the middles of both sides of the open spots on the diff. I do know for a fact though that all the clutch ears are there.

Whew .... the topic title of this scared me. I almost didn't wanna click.

J/K ..... but yeah, I agree. I think they were replaced at one time & the person didn't remove the old pieces .......

Its already back together and ready to go except brakes. Once I get those on ill drive it and if it makes any noise, its coming back out and getting taken completely apart. We'll hope for the better. The gears are 3.73's so it has been take apart before. There is very little play in it. no back and forth play on the pinion. Hopefully it goes well so I dont have to pull it back out, but it i do, then i do. Ill let you all know, and if i get it apart and find out if those were pieces from this diff. then ill let you know also.

those may not have been from the carrier you currently have but i am positive that they are ears from the fricton clutches.good luck and i hope you dont have to pull it back apart.
