I just pulled the axles out of my 9" to see for sure what it is. The axles have 28 splines and the outside of the bearings measure 2.83". Are these the large bearings or the small ones.If I turn the yoke or the left tire the right wheel does't turn. If I turn the right tire the left turns the opposite direction.I take it this is an open rear end.

Yes that's an open differential. I'm not sure but I believe the small bearing is the one where the axle diameter is the same from the splines to the bearing, the large is where the axle diameter steps up in size before the bearing. Or measure the bolt pattern on the backing plate, and got to Strange or Moser's website and compare the measurements with their's to see which bearing you have.

The small bearing axle housing will use a 3/8 bolt holding the retainer plate on and the large will use 1/2 bolts. If you used a 9/16 socket to remove the nuts it is the 3/8 bolt and the small bearing. If it took a 3/4 socket it is the large.

Not completely accurate, there are also small bolt/large bearing housings.Dont recall the years they were used , but they're out there.
