Engine What Camshaft?

Hey guys,

I’ve in the process of adding new head to my ‘88 mass air converted foxbody and I’m trying to figure out what would be the best camshaft for my application that would cover 2 main factors - drivability & low -mid range power. Or maybe the stock can is the best?

Here is what is done the the current motor and have no plan to add a blower or nitrous.
-Stock bottom end
-ARR 165cc heads with 1.6 roller rockers (emission legal)
-GT40 upper & lower
-70 Accufab TB
- EV6 Bosch 19# injectors
- Stock mass air meter
-3.73 gears
-T-5
-2.5” flowmasters exhaust
-BBK headers

Any help would be great! Thanks

If you want to get the most out of it then an Ed Curtis custom cam.

If you want one fast and are willing to give up a little power then call Comp cams or the like and have them spec you one of their off the shelf cams.

I would replace the stock Mass Air meter with a 75mm pro-m unit (#19lb) before anything else.... the mass air should theoretically be larger than the throttle body to create air velocity.... as far as cams go, I will be seeing what others say bc I am looking at the afr 165s as well with a same setup as you (plus the pro-m 75mm)

Youll be told its outdated technology. Youll be told that you are leaving power on the table. They are right. A custom grind will maximize the potential of your combo. That being said, I run a fcam and while its old, I still like it despite my car being an automatic. Consider the suggestions because a cam can totally change a car's "fun factor"

With AFR165s you are going to need 24s (possibly 30s if you were to use a custom cam and a better intake). You will also want a meter 80mm or bigger.

I'm not a total hater of the letter cams, they sound sooooo old sckol kool, they do add to the 'fun factor' and a wicked exhaust rumble at idle.
They are known for low idle bucking and jumping, some were able to 'tune' it out, with the right 'stuff' they are a sht ton of fun.
But like has been said it's old tech'.

I got lucky general. It has good street manners, surprisingly. Used to die at lights and what not but y'all helped me keep it running steady :nice:
