What do you think... trannie fried? (88 LX 5.0 w/ T-5)

So I've been having a very high pitched whine emitting from my car, and as of last night, I loaded at the bottom of 3rd gear coming home; about 2 seconds into 3rd, all of the sudden comes this grinding sound, and my RPMs continue to rev while the car goes nowhere. I now hear this rattling, metal sound... I can put the car into gear, but any attempt to disengage the clutch results in a grinding, loading, high-pitched squal of doom. The car seems to sit in gear with the car off just fine, so I know the clutch didn't do (not that it was anywhere close,) I checked the cable, that seems to be fine, and I'm trying to get the trans plug out to check the fluid. The transmission itself is coated in fluid, and has sprayed all over. I am assuming The trans burned up? Any input here is welcome.

That's pretty much been my fear, and I've been wanting to believe it could be something else. Where's the best place to pickup a rebuild kit?

I think you are gonna need more than a rebuild kit. Sounds like you busted hard parts like the countergear and or speed gears. They are not included in a rebuild kit.

Get the t-5 out and opened up and then you'll see what I need. Hanlon Motorsports is a great place for parts and rebuild kits

I'd be opening it up right now, but I live in the Mesa (see also: dirt, sand, wind, 'nuff said) without a garage, and don't want any debris finding it's way into anything. Trying to swindle a replacement used T5 if possible... Anyone care to work something out?

well

you could always do it in the house. i built a engine in my back room wonce. the wife hated it but she was cool as long as i was making progress on it. dont ask just do it. but putting in a replacement then rebuilding the old one as a backup would be great.

I've done 3 in my living room. One you degrease the case outdoors and do the initial opening and make sure all the fluid drains out, these trans are fairly clean inside

that ****e is dead, unfortunately rebuild kits usually replace synchros and gaskets, but sounds like you may need new gears as well which go for about 100 a piece. maybe consider a swap to another trans.

you can get a rebuilt t-5 for 700 dollors from here
Rebuilt manual transmissions,M5R1,M5R2,T5,AX5,NV4500
there are alot of places that have them ready to go for cheaper you just got to look around

Ah yes I can totally back up this statement. I'm stationed at Kirtland AFB and I can tell you, the wind, sand.. everything, is HELL when trying to work on cars. Thankfully I have a shop here on base I go to regularly but damnit-man, I feel for you.

If it were Me I'd make a run to U-Pick-U-Pull or whatever its called. If you want I'd be more than happy to run up there with you and see what they have. Last I checked I didn't see any T5s but regardless, if you do find one, hit me up I'll be more than happy to come help you out.

Depending on what I can work out, if you can get the car on base, I can probably work you in the shop, so we can use the lifts and such instead of working on the ground. Let me know.

Check that out, just get a rebuild kit for that one and you'll be good to go. Hope this helps.
