Me and my coworker are arguing about this.

I said it stands for: 4 bolt main, 4 barrel carb, 2 wheel drive.

He claims its 400 horse, 400 trq, 2 wheel drive. I told him there is no way that motor put down those numbers but he maintains that it did.

I know someone on here has to know for sure!

thanks for the help,

Adam

In 1964 Olds introduced the 442 with a 330 cu in, 4 barrel, dual exhaust engine and it was only available with a 4-speed so the 442 meant: 4-speed, 4 barrel, dual exhaust. In 1965 they offered the new 400 cu in engine and an automatic was also available. It stood for 400 cu in, 4 barrel and dual exhaust from then up until 1970 when the 400 cu in engine was dropped for a 455 so from then on it was just numbers.

Yup....442 means 4 barrel, 4 speed, dual exhaust. Hotrodnut is right.

4 barrel carb
4 speed transmission
2 exhaust pipes

I always thought it was 4 barrel, 4-speed, dual exhaust, but I saw one at a show last weekend that was automatic and it had me scratching my head lol. I guess that pretty much explains it.

I didn't know it had two meanings. I've always heard what most of you haven't..... 400 c.i./4-barrel/Dual Exhaust. Thank you for clarifying that hotrodnut. I guess we were all right, lol.

as somebody else already mentioned:

4 barrel carb
4 speed transmission
2 dual exhaust

Those things could also run 12.9's stock. That's pretty quick for an old muscle car.

You're welcome SeventyMach1, do you still have the 70 Mach1? That was one of my favorite Muscle Cars from the era.
