What else do I need when I buy new ring and pinion?

I want to invest in rear gears. Preferably 3.73! I hear a lot of good things about them. I do hear mixed stories about some people saying they get better mileage, and some others say they get worse mileage. But I hear it makes the car real fun to drive, and everyone in forums seem to recommend them. I'm just curious what I should order besides the ring and pinion. I checked www.gefracing.com and they seem to have the best prices.

I know I will have to pick up the speedo gear and a friction modifier. They list 3 different installation kits, but I'm not sure if I really need any one of them. Those were listed at here. Can anyone give me some insight on what I may need? Thanks guys!

I bought axle bearings and seals with my gears and ended up not needing them. My car had 80k miles at the time. You won't really know until you take it apart and see what condition your bearings and seals are in. I did also get a new pinion bearing and would recommend that at the least. You could just have all the bearings and seals replaced and have the 'piece of mind' that it is all new.

My recommmendation is at the bare minimum replace the pinion bearing/race ($10.00 @ Autozone) and of course the fluid.

The gear kit will come with the ring, pinion, pinion nut, crush collar & a range of pinion shims.

Nothing else is absolutely necessary.

But like stated above, you won't know the condition of the rear end until you take everything apart.

Is this thing hard to install on your own? Or is it something that should be done professionally? If so, how much do you think it will cost? Thanks again!

IMO you should have them pro installed if you have no idea on them. They will be able to see what all you need and give you the correct pinion depth etc... You want them to last and not chip a tooth or whine too much. Good choice on the gears!

i work at a dealer in south florida when ever i change the ring and pinion i always change the crush sleeve and pinion nut those are mandatory replacements everything else youll have to check while the diff is opened dont forget u have to torque the pinion to 180 ft lbs in order to crush the crush sleeve

This fluid protects the clutches in the rear differential from prematurely wearing out.

when i was looking to get mine installed one guy said just bring him the ring and pinon and he would take care of the rest. The other guy said to get an install kit. I would ask the person who is going to install them

Get clutch pack from ford! Its a wise investment and its cheap.
