Im not positive, but sounds like you have either a Ford 400 or a 351M on your hands. A late 70's creation of ford to replace their big blocks in most vehicles. The 351M was a destroked 400, same block, but they have C6 bellhousing patterns. Do a google search on the ford 335 series engine family and I think you will find your engine there.

Hmm, strange, it has the FMX casting numbers, but not the dual pattern. I stand by my original guess that its a 351M or 400M.....maybe somebody else can shed some light on the subject.

so ive concluded that this block is a 400 im going to check the stroke tomorrow to see if its a 351m or a 400 the block casting number that i searched keeps showing as a 400fmx but i know mine isnt because of bellhousing pattern ive read that these motors have a lot of torque so my plan is to freshen her up and put her in my 92 mustang if any one else can help to see if this a 351m or 400 i would appreiciate it and a list of basic mods for the engine(cam heads intake exhaust just for a start) thanks for the help

you imperatively need zero deck pistons and a straight up timing set. The pistons are way down the hole and the cam timing is retarded 4 degrees from factory.
