Pinion?? Mark the driveshaft and go by the number of times the driveshaft rotates per 1 rotation of the tire.

Correct. For example, if the driveshaft turns approximately 3 times, you've got 3.08 gears. If it turns a little more than 4 times, you've likely got 4.10s, and a little less than 4 times is 3.73....three and a half is 3.55...and so on. I like using a string and a weight on the shaft....let the weight hang straight down from the drive shaft and make sure it's tied on TIGHT, then count how many wraps the string goes around the shaft. The weight is there to make sure you're starting at dead center at the bottom since the weight pulls it down straight. Marking it works also, just be careful to mark it right since the difference between 3.55 and 3.73 isn't a whole lot, and a mistake can make up for the .18 of a turn.

no driveshaft on it, i am going by the flange that the shaft bolts to.

In that case i have no idea...unless you're a little off on how many times it's turned. I think the lowest gear ratio put in an 8.8 was 2.73, but i could be wrong. That's at least the lowest i've ever heard of.

The flange that the D/S bolts to would also turn at the same rate as the driveshaft

Is the opposite tire turning at the same rate as the one you are spinning.

If both tires spin together then you should get at LEAST 2.75 turns ouf of that flange meaning 2.73's.

Figured I'd slightly hijack this thread...

By my build tag in the drivers door, I've referenced and it says I have 3.73 gears. Was this even a possibility in my '90 2.3LX Convertible, or am I reading the chart wrong?

If I do in fact have these gears, will they be strong enough to support a 302 with around 250hp/300tq or so?

I'm an electrical/interior guy.......not a rear end guy.....at all.....

Thanks for the help!!
Kyle

Yes, 4-bangers did some with 3.73's and 3.45's in them depending on which trans you had. I forget what got what.

No it won't hold. 7.5's are weak
