I don't understand how there can be a such thing as 3 valves per cylinder. I understand 2 (1 for exhaust 1 for intake) and 4 (2 per), but how does 3 work? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Yeah they just put an extra lob on the cam to control the extra intake valve and voila more power.

Well, if he's talking about the "Ford GT" .... then they DO use a 4 Valve. The new "Mustang GT" has a 3 Valve, like the edge Mach 1's. And as John said, Cobra's have 4 Valve motors as well.

I meant the mustang gt. Why don't they just use 4 valves (dohc) instead of 3 valves? Same with the Explorer.

4 valves = more moving parts which = more things that can go wrong which = a lot of $$$ to spend to fix. Plus its probably not needed. I thought most of the 3v engines were 1 intake 2 exhaust

So when we rebuild our engines, (HCI), is it impossible to fit 3 lobes per cyclinder with a pushrod engine. I'm assuming so, or else wouldn't there be 3 valve heads for 5.0's. Or is there other problems.

You'll need an extra lifter, rocker, and pushrod for each cylinder, along with a new block that could accept all of thoes parts.

Someone should start a poll about who does or doesn't keep magazines (not Playboy!) in their bathrooms!

You'd need a whole new motor. The block would need 8 extra pushrod holes in it.

No we drive cars that have a PUSHROD OHV set up. Those 3v motors are modular motors OHC(over head Cam) very different from ours.
