what is powershifting?

25thMustang - My car is my only car...I will not risk my daily driven car that gets me from school, work, etc...etc...by trying to get the best out of it. I know I could get even quicker times out of my car...but I will not risk it...I shift hard/quick...but I let off the gas very quickly and slam it back down...you can barely see my leg do it:) But I will not risk it. I don't have something to fall back on and won't damage something that expensive on my budget just to have fun for a few seconds to get a tenth quicker time...it simply doesn't have the "worthness" to me to do that.

I get a kick out of guys like you were their cars are broken down on the side of the road or at the strip before "us" others :nice:

Driving has a lot to do with it. Just because one guy pulls a 16 second time in a 05 Viper and you pull a 15 second quarter mile time in the same car/same night. That doesn't mean your a good driver.

Anyways your example of the 99 Gt is answered by the year model. The t45 is a bit stronger and it has less miles on it...let us know how it goes with your 230rwhp...when many in here have more power than that and talking about powershifting.

1st. Dont know who you are addressing but none of my cars have ever been broken down on the side of the road or track.

2nd. Your little Viper story does prove that one driver is better than the other, even if they both suck.

3rd. The T45 trans is not much stronger than a T5, thats the reason Ford switched to a stronger Tremec in 2001. I only listed my drivetrain mods. I run a 100 shot on the street and have turned a best ET of 11.98 in a bolt on GT.

I thought power shifting was when you let your foot off the gas and shift real fast w/o using the clutch. Immedietly after lifting your foot off the gas it relieves all load from the clutch allowing you to shift (VERY quickly) without grinding or anything. Maybe that's not poewr shifting, but I bet its a bitch to do either way :)

Some old school guys call that powershifting I guess. I havent tried that before, atleast not in my car...lol
Powershifting isnt hard to do just tough to master. Usually when I do it RPM's wont jump anymore than 500 before I get it in the next gear. The sound of the motor alone is enough reason to powershift !!!

That shifting without the clutch does NOT happen at high RPM, on our trannies you will NOT get it into gear and anyone that tells you otherwise is lying. You can do it however going slow at about 2000 RPM (not sure on exactly the number) and can slide it in and out of gear without the clutch, this I do every so often, and is pretty easy!

I can see peoples side about powershifting and not doing it, and I can say I might be different if this ws my only car, but then again I really think I am too accustomed to powershifting that I wouldnt get myself to lift every shift.

As far as shifting fast, yes I will do that on the street, as I feel no need to powershift it on the road, but at the track, I race heads up, and every tenth counts, and a good shift will make or break a win. I for one dont feel its as bad on a tranny as most say, but then again I have a stock rear with 135,000 miles on it, running 1.69-1.73 60's all day with no issues too. I might just be lucky!

Powershifting is what seperates the men from the boys...

:rlaugh: yea no thanks for my daily driver.... i run pretty decent times for my mods, and i "granny shift" i know i could gain a couple tenths powershifting, but dont really feel like risking it, especially with 3rd gear, i'm tempted to do it on 2nd a couple of times, i've done it before

Yes, but it increases the chances. That is my point. You need to put down that disclaimer or some newb is going to go to the track and try out your technique and possibly screw something up because of how you made powershifting appear.

Correct, but that wasn't the point. You put how you ran about .5 seconds quicker when you powershifted compared to another driver. That is two different situations and again someone could read it straight up (you would be surprised) and see how powershifting helps out 1/2 second. That is not accurate. Now that was my point.

I never said it was "much stronger" It is stronger and the age is newer along with the mileage. That all helps prolong the life of a powershifted tranny...did I say you can only do it once and it breaks? Nope. It increases the chance.

For my daily driver (only car), I'm not taking the chance. Just footnote the pros/cons of something potentially damaging to someone's car and wallet. That is my point.

Almost any and every modification you make to your Mustang is to make it perform better. Any time you add a performance mod you increase the chance of breaking something. 3.73's for example turns your engine RPM's higher at all speeds thus cause more wear and tear on your motor.
Im not saying you cant damage your trans by powershifting, Im saying the reason you buy a Mustang is to drive it and drive it hard. To me its worth the risk to beat the guy in the other lane.

No, a mustang isn't to just beat on or drive hard :nonono:

There are mods that aren't as "elaborate" like 373's are better than 410's on the wear and tear. Just like speedshifting is better than powershifting. That is my point.

A 65mm TB isn't going to just rip anything off the car over the stock throttle body. But when you start meshing 190-450rwhp powershifts with the internal tranny gears quickly...don't be surprised is something goes "kaplunk" :nice:

Anyways...you don't buy a mustang just to drive it and drive it hard...

So you bought a V8 Mustang for its fuel economy and reliabilty ?? I sure didnt. Ive bought V8 Mustangs because I knew they were quick and with the right parts they could be even faster. Many years ago I beat a H/C/I 5.0 vert with my stock powershifted 5.0 from that point on I knew how important knowing how to drive your car was.

I never much liked powershifting synchronized transmissions. It's not bad till you get up to about 6500 rpms, then you start running into problems. I picked up 3 tenths in the 1/4 when I switched to the Liberty Pro-shifted TKO vs the synchronized street version. It's completely the opposite of a synchronized trans. Clunky at low and mid rpm shifts and smooth and effortless on full throttle 7,600 rpm shifts. It gets alot of attention at the track just because the sound it makes when shifting. Awesome trans.

Anything over 6000-6200 on a synchronized tranny is tough. Again since powershifting is so important this is why the racers throw trannys built for it in cars. If it wasnt that important they would leave the synchronized ones in and speed shift it!

I see both sides, and dont tell anyone they have to powershift, its their choice. I tell them if they dont powershift, dont ask me to drive the car, as I will... lol!

Those are two factors. I get 24mpg and the mustang whether it be a 2.3L, 3.8L, 4.6L, 5.0L all last a very long time properly maintained. So yes, reliability and mpg are both in the equation. Plus appearance, personal satisfaction, budget, etc...all play. Not just to drive it hard...that is what I call a beater and my daily driver (mustang) is not a beater.

I have beat a zo6 to 100mph but that doesn't mean I had to powershift it to do that and that was in my 2000 GT. That wasn't a "real" point.

Powershifting is a risky business...just let it be known.

I never said powershifting is "bad" for drag cars or makes the car slower. Never did I say that. It isn't a good idea. Speed shifting will be safer than power shifting. Why do you think the timing is retarted in between shifts on cars like the sn95's? To save the trannies that are behind the powerplant. It goes against the powershifting...

it is risky too powershift.. but it depends on what your looking for out of your car. i want too get the most out of what i have. and powershifting helps. plus it's fun. but on the other hand this is not my daily driver.

if you want too have fun with a performance car then parts breakage is part of the game. i have beaten faster cars then mine because the other guy is more concerned about parts breakage than me..

That is all I was wanting to be known. It is riskier and I say no thank-you. I doubt I'm losing no more than a 1/10th of second because I don't powershift.

It's all how you look at it: Are they worried about parts breaking literally...or getting to work on time? :nice: It's not just, "bummer I need a new tranny" - it's "bummer, I don't have another mode of transportation".

I'm sure if you powershift a geo metro with 53hp behind it (or in front...lol)...something can happen to. It isn't just "fast cars". Besides my car isn't anywhere near fast...

Suzuki Hyabusa is more like it...

it is just crazy how people get different way of thinkin... any ways """oohsoobad2""" does that mean that i cant have a v8 car for everyday drive? y bc i dont beat the hell out of it every day? u judt dont know what r u talking and fuel economy its not our main goal even tho we always try to get the most out of....now going back to the topic not all the time i do shift with out clutch .. i didnt know it was called power shift... just gotta know engine time(dunno how to explain it about engine time(just feels like there is a right time to shift into the next gear and it will go smoot when u do at the right time) done it for many yrs... correct me if i'm wrong wont it be loosing time at the track ? never done it at high rpm or at the track .... at the track i think quick shift will be better than powershift
