what is powershifting?

I powershift all the time and my tranny is perfectly fine. I think the key is I have a new soft stock style clutch. With a rock hard clutch I can maybe see more damage being done. I usually powershift it at around 5000rpm. I dont like taking my 200,000km motor any higher than that.

Hhmm.. let me see if I can try and figure out what the hell you are saying.

Your saying you dont beat the hell out of your car but you shift it without the clutch sometimes ??

'engine time' ?? Still tryin to figure that one out. Are you talking about RPM's ?? Thats what most, 'normal' people shift by.

And finally, yes your are a smart one... speedshifting at the track will be quicker than shifting without the clutch (your definiton of powershifting).

Maybe you 'judt' need to work on your 'smoot' shifting so you quit 'loosing' time on the track.... Retard

Does it shift smooth at around 5k?? Or is it harder to shift, does it fight you??


Mentioned earlier about that good tranny that shifts smooth at high rpms.
My gandpas truck (2002 edge ranger) When i gun it in that thing, its hard to shift, you have to pay extra attention to your shifts. But at cruising rpms it shifts like butter. I am not sure if its a t5 or not.

But on the topic of powershifting, i've never done it but i wouldnt want to do anything unnessecary to make the tranny die faster. Sure it may help but i wouldnt want to live going " will my tranny live through this shift??"

basic principles of force and manual trannies:

since manual trannies are direct drive (no fluid linkage), there is only one EXACT rpm for each speed in a given gear
when you push on the accelerator in gear, the engine is speeding up the wheels, when you let off the accelerator, for a split second there is no force between the wheels and the engine, and then the wheel speed begins to keep the engine rpms up to where they are, until u push in the clutch and it drops to 1000 rpm

at that time when there is no force on the drivetrain, you can shift out of and into another gear

try this sometime... accelerate in second gear (or third, whatever) and try to pull the shifter out of gear when ur accelerating, then without letting off pressure from the shifter lever, let off the accelerator, and the car should easily slip out of gear.

hopefully you all can kinda feel what im talking about

if not, its cuz i just pulled my tranny this week and found the idiot who rebuilt the engine didnt put in a pilot bearing, and i havent driven the car with one in yet.

btw, broke four teeth off my stock t5 because of the no bearing thing...it sucks

I know exactly what you mean. I usually lightly pull the car out of gear when Im sure I'll have to stop... one less time I'll have to push the clutch in.

when i drive stick cars.... as a i approach a stop, i just put the shifter in neutral and coast, instead of riding the clutch.

Is this ok for a standard???

Can someone list the "lil things not to do" when driving a stick??

Ive been power shifting for years in my daily driver. If you only power shift the 1-2 , & 3-4 shifts your be fine. The week link is the 2-3 shift. I always lift shift on that one because all T-5 tranny's are known for week syncro's on the 2-3 shift. besides If your worried about damage, theres alot more damage that can be done to your motor if you miss a shift while power shifting. 1st 5400rpm shift, 2nd 5600, and 3rd 5800.

well, those shift rpms depends on your gearing

little things....
-keep ur foot ALL THE WAY off the clutch when not using it, even a tad of pressure can wear out the throwout bearing if ur cable isnt adjusted right
-dont slide the clutch, letting it out too fast when shifting is better than revving high and then burning the ***** outta it
-slipping it outta gear will get u worse gas mileage tho, ive been told the best way to save gas is to leave it in the highest gear you go to, and just brake until the engine gets to idle, then push in the clutch or just pull it outta gear(should come out with no problem), that way the engine isnt going from 4000rpms to 1000 rpms in one second
-someone asked me if it saved gas to get to the highest gear the fastest, but cruising around at 45 in 5th gear will get u ***** for gas mileage, it all depends on your gearing and your engine output, if its fighting to keep u going 45 cuz its only at 1000 rpm, its gonna be less efficient than pushing u at 45 at 2000 rpm, because its putting out more power then, even tho its using more gas per second, the gas will be used more efficiently (kinda complicated)
-push the clutch in all the way when shifting, unless ur speed shifting, but speed shiftings not gonna save any tranny/clutch life
-i cant think of anymore right now but if i do ill post em up

might get some different feedback from other stangers, ive only been driving stick for a year and a half, and get 14 mpg at best city driving on 15k mile rebuilt engine (crappy eec tho)
