My car is making loud banging/knocking sounds when i hit bumps and rough pavement, someone said that if i tighten that nut the problem will be solved. I was just wondering what that nut adjusts before I mess something up more. Or if you have any other suggestions of what the sound could be. It sounds almost like im going over really big expansion joints in a bridge.
What is the big nut on top of the strut an adjustment for?

It should just be for holding the strut there, if it's coming loose, you might want want to get a new lock nut (or strut if they're old enough).h0oligan said:

What 89roadster said. Also check the strut mount, (the plate under the nut) and the strut itself for wear. Both of these items will give you the symptoms you are experiancing.

Yes, it is THE fastener for the top of the strut! When you have it removed the top of the strut shaft has threads on it and that is what that big nut threads onto.
It is the Oh No nut! when it comes loose and the strut falls down, the car will go all over the road and you will say "Oh No, Oh No, or maybe something more colorful!h0oligan said:
