What is this?

OK, since it is winter now, i pulled my gas tank to replace the sending unit and pump, also going to rebuild the rear end...and while in there in going to clean it up underneath.

Well i looked under there today while grinding at some rust and noticed this thing, which hangs and is bolted to the front of the rear diff. It was loose and i don't know what it is:scratch:

and it seemed to have some sort of cover on the right side:shrug:

My main concern was that it was actually loose:eek:

Any ideas on what this is? sorry for the long read, thanks guys:nice:

That is what many call a dogbone. It takes up extra harmonics from the drivetrain and is supposed to keep vibrations down.

Some remove it to lose weight. Some notice vibrations, and some do not. I took mine off and noticed no difference. I did have an aluminum driveshaft at the time.

The couple I have messed with typically feel loose...

I have mine off and have noticed alot more harmonics coming from the rear end and the gears are set perfect. When I get a chance mine is going back on. I doubt you would ever notice a few pounds in a 1/4 mile et. I say keep it unless you have a driveshaft loop or something else that gets in the way.

Many like as much weight transfer to the back as possible, like a battery relocation.

Especially something to do with drivetrain harmonics, I would consider how important it is to you before removing it.

Now it is easily removed and replaced, so you may could do a trail and error.

I painted mine neon green to match my neon orange brake drums and my red spoiler that sits on top of my caution yellow wide body kit.:rlaugh: I hate ricers, that last statement was waaaaayyy :OT: but I saw some wacked out nonsense like that today that made me laugh.
