A van down by the river
Hey guys! Recently finished building a nice 302. At first, I estimated 275 horsepower, but that seems low. Anyone have a similar build, or a good guess on power? GT40P heads (upgraded springs, not ported) B303 cam, 1.72:1 rockers, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley 600cfm carb, very nice K&N air cleaner, unequal length shorty headers, BBK h-pipe, no catalytic converter, no A/C, dual electric fan

Anywhere from 275-300 rwHP.

Usually the 300 rwHP combos have some good money sunk into them. Porting, different valves, maybe a custom grind cam, etc.

Good thread for reference, although most are EFI combos

Someone please post the b-cam video. @79 Fox the b cam is, well, generally considered be terrible. The stocker with the 1.72s make actually be better. There are at least a half dozen OTS cams that are better. If you plan on swapping, a custom cam is far superior and does not cost that much more than the more popular OTS cams.

Nothing wrong with a GT-40P head and B cam combo. Years back I drove my friend's '93 LX with a 306 and GT40P's and a B cam and factory 3.08's. It was a blast to drive that car as it made plenty of power and really liked to rev. Solid combo.

I wouldn't really run out to change the cam right now. Not worth it for what you'd gain. If you ever decide to go with a better head, then you should revisit the cam

I have a very similar combo besides fuel injection: edelbrock performer heads, trick flow rockers and springs, BBK ssi intake, & long tubes. Not sure what cam is in the dang thing though. Before i tuned it properly it made about 280hp on the dyno. (you'll lose a tiny bit on an auto) But it also made about the same in torque... And that's where the bite is. I have 3.55 gears on a T5 and shoot, it snaps necks with some good grip. More than enough for a daily in my opinion.
