p.s. my car seems to handle better with 225/50's then the 245/50's did

The 245 puts an additional 20mm of rubber on the road. Because of this, the surface area of the footprint increases. As a result, you need to lower tire pressure. Sounds to me that if the outside edges are not touching the road, then your tire pressure was too high.
