well got the engine out and torn down slightly. (due to making a heck of a knocking sound)

so anyway when I removed the oil pan I found a few things... lots of metal shavings (which I didn't find when I drained the oil while the motor was in the car btw), and about half of a washer looking thing. what is there is also a little cracked. whatever it is is in bad shape and most likely cause the problem.

took apart some of the head (the valve train from the cylinder that got the bad compression before) and there is nothing there that even resembles this piece I found in the oil pan. closest thing to it is the outer edge of the valve spring retainer, but it doesn't match up perfect. I sat a retainer next to the chunk I found in the oil pan to give you an idea in the picture.

anyone know what this could be?

now the other question is, do I scrap this motor and just find another one or keep going? I really wasn't planning on pulling the crankshaft and rebuilding everything is going to cost more than just buying a new motor. I really though the problem would be in the heads but they look fine so far.

the half moon piece,no idea.kinda looks like the oil pan drain plug sealing washer

I was thinking washer or retainer or something like that too, till I looked close. should have mentioned the inside portion of that is recessed.

anyway if it is a spun bearing, then chances are the crankshaft is cooked as well, so if I change that I'm looking at all new rod bearings right? any ideas what this is going to run $wise?

I'm thinking about just buying a transplant

I have no idea wtf that is. Either way, the engine will need a rebuild or you'll need a new shortblock. I would just buy a forged shortblock from MMR and use your stock heads. It would cost about $2800.

I priced everything out, and as long as the crank and pistons are good, I'm going to attempt a rebuild. the cyls. look good so far, you can still see the cross marks from honing.

summit has a rebuild kit with piston rings and all gaskets for $388 so I think I'm going that route with a few upgrades along the way... anyone ever use that kit?

You did not mention what year it is(or I did'nt pay attention).but I have stock rods out of a 2000,if you have a bad rod,I will give you one.just pay shipping.also have a windsor 8 bolt crank that will polish up nicely, that I would let go next to nothing

I'll definately keep that in mind, I'll let you know soon too.

also that kit I previously mentioned... just realized they only have that for 96-98, so I have to keep looking there too:bang:

trying to keep costs as low as possible, but so forged parts are pretty much out...

anyway final verdict is 2 bad rod bearings, #4 and #8. crank looks ok to me but I guess I'll be taking it somewhere to have it checked out.

i was over in your garage last night and took a peak haha.. you are going to have your crank resurfaced... just because it looks okay, it is somewhat warped :)

bringing everything out tommorrow to accurate in middletown, he doesn't do heads though so I have to bring those elsewhere.

thanks for the tip on the oil pump, didn't think of that but it makes sense, that piece was in the very front of the oil pan

make sure you put a new oil pump in as that part looks like part of the pressure relief valve in an oil pump

took apart the oil pump completely and everything looks fine, may still look into a new one though

total from the machinest including price of a crankshaft kit with bearings, and piston rings, heads ported, polished, valve job is under $1400

still need to find main bearing bolts, other than that head change kit and all other gaskets needed is about $300, plus new clutch and I should be done with the whole thing for under $2000 :D

Get forged parts or you'll kick yourself later when the supercharger/turbocharger/nitrous bug hits you and you want 450+HP and can't do it safely with stock internals.
