What the heck is this tranny?

Bought a tranny from a guy who also sold me a 351W.

Anyway, it looks very similar to my 1969 Mustang's 3-speed, but the shifter is not at the back on the tailpeice, it's on top above the access plate. He said it came out of a truck, but that it didn't have creeper gears in it. I had thought it might work in my car, but really only bought it because he charged me $50 to add this to the 351W w/4bbl and extra 2bbl and manifold (All for $180). Motor supposedly runs good.

Does this description help anyone out? I'll probably try to get numbers off of it tonight if I can clear the snow off of it and sneak it into the house.

it could be a SROD 4 speed, looks similar to a toploader

Ditto on that, but as far as being an SROD, I'm not sure. The SROD had the shifter on the tailshaft. There's another truck version that had the shifter in the topcover, but I'm not sure if it was called a SROD. Either way both of these 3+1 Overdrive transmissions had all aluminum cases and tailshaft housings.

Sounds like a basic truck 4 speed, early to mid 80's. 300's and v8's could have them.

yup a 3+1 overdrive for like a 80's bronco... its a overdrive toploader... not sure about the use in a mustang with the shifter in the top cover, but it would go great in my early bronco let me know if you wanna get rid of it... i even have a couple of c-4s, AOD i'd trade you or something

A pic would be nice. It sounds like a tranny out of a Jeep. You can buy a top cover and integral shifter for a toploader to put one in a Jeep as I understand.

I'll try to take a pic tonight and post it on my website so you can check it out. I'll try to get the numbers off it too. For some reason I keep forgetting to do that. Been working on Identifying Carb and "honey-dos" (So I can spend time on the car without getting in trouble) so it just slipped my mind.

67coupestang, I'd like to get rid of it, but also would like to get a 4-speed manual to replace it, or an AOD as a second choice, but def. second choice. When I get the pics put up, take a look and see if it will work for you. The guy that sold it to me said it was working good, but it's a first time experience for me, so I can't tell. Only tranny experience I have is helping pull one off a LONG time ago when I was a kid so the clutch pads could be replaced.

I'm willing to put some work into a 4-speed if the price is right and it will work well in my 69 Stang. Must be able to handle a fairly stock 351W. I dont' plan on racing it or anything.

I've done a little research and decided that I'd really prefer a 4-speed or 5-speed manual. Either a Toploader, or a T-5. Basically, I'd take either if the price was right and the tranny was in good condition. It's been a while since I've even owned a manual.

I drove my mom's Ranger around for a while about 3 years ago I think. Tired 4Cyl rusting body. Hard to steer. Reliable truck, but not as fun to drive as our old '70 Chevy pickup. Of course that was the first vehicle I drove after getting my license, so that may have a bit to do with it. 4 shades of orange, 3 on the column, i6. Sometimes the shifter would jam and I'd have to pop the hood and push the linkage back into place. I wish I had that truck again. Now that I have some money and more experience.

Then again, I just got a Mustang, so why should I complain!!

You have a transmission out of an '85 Ford Pickup. It's probably a 3 speed, check the pattern to see if there's an extra dogleg off the H pattern, I'm thinking either towards and up, or away and down. If not then it's a 3 speed.

That's a 4 speed, overdrive transmission. It's similar to the SROD but the shifter and tailshaft housings are different. I don't know what it's called. It's main case is based on the Toploader 4 speed, but different. It ain't gonna work in a Stang. You wouldn't like the gear ratios anyway.

Come to think of it, I think you're right David, it's been a while, but I pulled a 300/manual tranny out of my brother-in-law's '81 F-100 to put in a 351w/C6 out of a van. The tranny that came out was the same configuration, but was so covered in grease and dirt, it looked like it was all wrapped up in a brown towel. Was tossing it anyway so I didn't care to clean it up. We got lucky, found a guy with a '82 4x2 he was turning into a 4x4, that was going from an auto to manual tranny, so we traded steering columns and got the piece he cut out of the floor to fill our hole. Got his V8 motor mounts and swapped radiators with him too as he was going I-6 or something.

It's a 4 speed, but it doesn't have creeper. I've almost narrowed it down but it just doesn't look like what I've seen. I'm not going to spend too much valuable time researching. I know I can't use it, but I would like to find someone who could. I'm doing a 69 mustang Coupe so if anyone has anything they think might be useful, or if they just plain could use this tranny, I'm sure we could make a deal to smile about.

I would like to clean this tranny though so that I can look for cracks and make it look better. Would the pressure washer at the carwash hurt it any?

The case is all aluminum, pressure washing won't hurt it a bit. I'd dowse it with gasoline first before washing to cut the grease. I did a 351W this way the other night, took 3 dowsings and washings at the car wash to cut the crap.Just don't point the spray directly at the seals ( shifter & tailshaft)

After blasting it with pressure washer found more numbers. I've determined that it is a T170FT RTS 4-speed with OD. All aluminum including shifter tower.

Basically it's Ford light-duty truck tranny and seems to have been built in 86.

I'd be willing to part with it for a song if anyone is interested. I'm located near the middle of Michigan's L.P.
