What to do with my rear end...

Well, when I put the stock tires back on for the winter a while ago, I noticed that one back tire was near bald and the other one was about half tread. I know both tires are spinning, but I guess at different rates.

I am thinking either the clutches are worn out in the diff, or the previous owner had a fluid change done and they didnt add friction modifier...

any thoughts?

If they didn't add friction modifier I can almost guarantee the clutches are worn out. I would say you need to rebuild the trac-loc.

well, if I am going to do that, I might as well rebuild the rear end with some stronger stuff....

Anyone here have a built rear end that they like?????

31 spline anyone ? How about some moser 31 spline axles w/ an eaton diff and some motive 3.73's / 4.10's ?

yeah, i was looking at getting some 31 spline axles with a better diff and 3.73 gears. I guess no one here has a built rear end?

I have 3.73 gears Moser 31 spline axles and an Eaton diff and love it.

My built solid was Alloy USA 31 spline axles, Ford Explorer 31 spline diff rebuilt with new 03/04 cobra clutches, motive master rebuild/install kit (all timken bearings) and FRPP 3.73 gears. Alloy USA makes a quality axle for the price, and nothing beats buying a diff on ebay for $60 and rebuilding it on the cheap for brand-new like performance

As far as your tires wearing unevenly, it also could be a tire pressure issue or bunch of other little things.

I running an used 31 spline explorer diff, Alloy USA axels, and an used set of 3.73 gears fom a ranger.




Diff was 80 after shipping plus 40 for a clutch rebuild kit . It came with new friction modifier.

Alloy usa axles came with new bearings seals and lugs.......205.

Used 3.73's from a ranger 35.

Gear lube from Advance auto 20.

Rear rebuild kit with all gaskets seals shims, pinion nut and crush sleeve 95..

Labor for install at 225.

It came to about 700 complete, It has been over a year, and I went to the track alot, so far so good.

do you guys run slicks, DR, or street tires?

I guess I need to take a trip to the local salvage yard! do all rangers have 3.73's?

I did a FRPP 31 spline diff setup with Moser axles. No problems after beating on my car with this combo for over 2 years.

I don't have an insane amount of power though.

I really want to be able to go to the track and run either slicks or DR's and not have to worry about anything breaking.

A buddy of mine took his car (400hp '86) out to the track with slicks on it, and it only lasted 3 passes before he broke his tranny and rear end. I dont want that to be me!

i have moser axles 31 spline a detriot true trac and 3.73 lightened gears that are also cryo froze... all pretty nice, i make less than 300 hp and i'm on street tires, but everythign works well... i replaced it because it got hit in an accident, so i built strong... if you don't want to do a detriot true trac at least rebuild yours with carbon clutches from the cobra

i love my rear set up i got 3.73 31 spline alloy axles and detroit tru trac i love it dont have to deal with clutches. i would recomnec the tru trac i found it on ebay brand new for 399. do go with the eatons i have see them blow up and auburns you cant rebuild. tru trac ftw

No they don't all come with 3.73s it depends on model transmisson and the way it was ordered. Some even come with 4.10s

I have made a bunch of passes with DRs and a couple with slicks. My car currently makes 385 rwhp.

I made lots of passes at 420rwhp+ on MT et street radials, held up fine (IRS's have held up just as well on a side note lol...).

Id really like to run slicks at the track, but I dont want to have to tow it so now I am thinking of going with DR's... The main reason I am looking at upgrading is because my diff is going out, otherwise I would use it till I broke something

run slicks it so much better my friend was running slicks when he was dun with them he went to mickey tompson drag radials. he ran them a few times and doesnt like them for the track. he said there good for the street but on the track they dont compare to a slick. he said if your into slipping the cluch they would be better suited for that. i think they are more for an auto car though
