What type of electric fan is best?

I'm not sure there is too much difference between one fan and another. The only big difference of course is the cfm rating, but blade shape does make SOME difference to the amount of amperage a given fan will draw at a given rpm/cfm.

Generally you want the biggest airflow you can afford, particularly if it is switched power. If you are tying your fan into a temperature activated switch, a manual switch, or an combo like kidtaurus is doing it is not as critical as it is if you don't. But in my book you cannnot have too much airflow when you are at a stoplight in the Texas summers (as long as your alternator puts out enough juice at idle that is).

I have a spal and am a big fan of it's power and compactness.
 
I'm using the Hot Rod Air electric fan, 8 blades, thermostat & relay included, 2700 cfm. I used it all last summer on the hot Georgia asphalt and never got close to the center mark on the temp gauge... I'm also using a 4-row radiator, which is a waste of money in my opinion, a good copper 3-row is more than adequate.

Scotts is a very reputable company they are used alot in nascar and busch racing and are very inexpensive Have a huge selection of sizes fans and motor. They do some advertising in circletrack magazine. I don't have phone number or web address or I would post it for you.
 
Well Honestly all good answers, but one thing you have to consider is whether or not you are going keep the manual fan or not. If you are going to add one in addition to it look for pusher type fans. There is a trick though. You have to installit the correct way otherwise it will not add to the cooling effects of your system. IT has to create a negative preasue infront of the stock fan. This will esentially double the efrectiveness of the manual fan. Let me try to explain it. EXlooking at the engine the manual fan would turn clockwise pulling the air. The fan in front of the raditator need to push counter clockwise. I spent years trying to find out a combo and I actually learned this trick in an engineering class. I tried it and my Mustang has yet to get over 210 in So cal weather and traffic. I use a manual flexfan and a 14in delerale (mispelled) in front. I cruise at SBs Route 66 and have no problem in 110 weather just sitting there cruise at 1 mph, while other puke green. Oh btw its on a manual toggle I just need to turn it on when its hot. Run a fan shroud, and not a cheap one either.
