What wheel and tire combos? Need advice

17's are not too small, tires are cheaper, they weigh less, 18" and up have shown no improvement in handling over a 17" setup. I run 17X9 up front and 17X10.5 out back. The max you can run out back is 7" of backspacing and that's pushing it, 4" is the max of "front" spacing that will fit in the wheel well as well. I wish I would have gone with 17X8's up front instead of 9" because there really isn't a tire made for a 9" wheel that is the same diameter as a 315-35-17 other than the 275's which can cause rubbing issues. A 245 is close to the same, but it fits better on a 8" wheel. I'm running 245's up front and they are a bit too stretched for my liking.

Here's a pic, I love the staggered look... I wouldn't even concider running anything but a 315 out back. Wide is mean as hell looking.

Would I have any issues running these 10.5 inch wheel in the back? I would like to keep my quad shock and not have any tailpipe rubbing issues?

That pic is the front wheel, I beleive the back ones will be DD unless they are made like the '03 Cobras. My '95 Cobra R's are DD.


Most people have to flip the quad shock, you wont have to remove it, just flip it so the fatter part is on the other side so the wheel dosent rub. I personally did have to flip mine. And I havent heard about but maybe one person having tail pipe problems. I have turndowns so I wouldnt know. the only problem i had was that a weight on the back would hit the e-brake cable bracket. I just bent it in a little and its perfect.

Wow! That looks awesome. Do you have rear spacers or are the real wheels 315s? A rear shot of your car from real low would be nice to post if you've got one.

He has 275's and IIRC he has some small spacers.

Here are my street rims 17x8 in front and 17x11 in rear American Racing Torq. Thrust II's, with 275/40/17 in front and 315/35/17 in rear

I agree with killer, the 275 is just too wide for my liking, I think I will go with some 255's to narrow it down alittle. Car is lower now since I addad bullit springs.

My track rims I dont have any pics of yet. Weld pro stars 15x8, and 15x3.5, with some small BFG drag radials for now going with either a 26in ET street or ET street radial in prob a 275.

I originally went with yoko 275s all the way around on cobra rs[it really is the ballsiest looking rim'...copied alot ] the fronts get too chewed up and you push to much resistance. I have since gone with 275s inthe reaar and 255s up front[went to kumho ecstas, like them alot more than the yokos...yokos had no chirp.

Well guys I picked up a set of 98 cobra wheels from the englishtown swap meet this past weekend and now considering getting two of the wheels widened an inch with a 1/2" spacer for the rear. I think i'm going to go with a 275 drag radial.

Has anyone put a 275 nitto drag radial on an 8" wheel? What are the cons of doing such a thing? pics are welcome! Thanks all

just put 275/40r17 nitto dr's on my friends 01'. I think those are 8'' rims (they're stock bullit rims). Anyways they went on much easier then expected. he's been loving them since I put them. Major improvement over those crappy fuzion zri's from before.

This is my wife's 96 Cobra.




I put 17x8 Bullitts on the front with 255/40's and the rears are replica Bullitts in 17x10.5 with 315/35's. The tires are Eagle F1 GS-D3's. Fitment was very easy: I flipped both quad shocks. On the right side I had to rotate the tail pipe (SLP cat-back) a little inboard. The inner fenderwells required a little bit of massaging with a BFH to alleviate a slight rub on hard cornering. The tires sit flush with all four fenders and the stance is great. The traction is outstanding.

Now the only problem is I got a quote from a local shop that widens wheels. He wants 250 per wheel. I can get 4 new wheels for that so I'm going the widened route I don't think. I am now thinking of going with 245/45 Nitto drag radials to stay with manufacturer width recommendations. I change my mind every day its nuts.
