what would it take for a 94 cobra to beat an ls1

There's only one way you're going to easily beat a LS1, upgrade your tyres and suspension, put your car on a strict diet, and own him in the corners.

In a straight line, they just have too much over our 302's but their weight will bite them going through the twisties.

As per your original question on how to beat a ws6, well, luck would be a major part in it.

My friend Tim has a ws6, he has exhaust, lid, and tune, and I can beat him pretty easily. Now if were talking F.A.S.T intake, head porting and a cam, I dont have much of a chance besides I can drive better than him. I have the advantage all the way to 6500 rpm, thats where my power is basically gone, where as a ls1 still pulls hard there.

And anything short of a R4 or A4 block with forged everything is minor bolt ons to me. :D j/k nmcgrawj

they are far from unbeatable

Most ls1's I've seen at my track run low 14s, high 13s around 99-100. Untuned I went 13.1 @ 104 and had taken care of MULTIPLE ls2 gto's. Tuned I've torn them up pretty good. But they do run!

I've also DRIVEN a 6spd 02 z28. Fun, but not as fast as theyre made out to be. Maybe we have bad air in ohio??
With the right mods and a solid tune in a well driven car, I wouldnt be too scared to line up. Everyone should have a power adder anyways ;) No squeeze, no fun :P

The additions of a cam, gears and pullies will do the trick to run with a mild ls1. That makes your cobra a H/C/I car, already having the GT-40 stuff, the pullies will free up a couple hp, and the gears will put you in your RPM range.

Now, comfortably outrunning ls1 is a different story. If the cobra is going to stay a N/A 302, you wll have to have some good aluminum heads and a cam.

A buddy of mine used to have a 95 cobra with a AFR 165/Crane cam/cobra intake combo + every possible supprting mod. His car beat bolt-on ls1's on the freeway and of the line.

LS1 vs. Mustang

I can beat a Trans am till about 100 mph, then it is usaually a nose to nose race. The only mods my 94 GT has is shorty headers, pace setter off road x-pipe, smog pump delete kit, and March Ram Air. For some reason i can smoke a Z28. I guess that's where the 5 - speed comes in.
I live in Flordia so i don't have to worry about emmisions.

Just being honest, i find that hard to believe. If its a equal match...MAYBE a LT1. But no way a LS1. You dont have anything that makes power except the off road pipe and maybe the headers. A new 99+ GT would walk a 5.0 like yours by the end of 2nd gear...a trans am wouldnt be close. I know because it happends to me. I had a buddy with a 03 GT 5-speed. We both just had exhaust...pullies...short throw. The very basics. I would have the edge off the line...the front of his car would be at my door. Bang to 2nd gear...its dead even....get ready to go to 3rd...and im starting to see tail lights. Im not the BEST driver. But i can hold my own. The power just isnt there on the top end. :bang:

You say thats where the 5-speed comes in....LS1's come with 6-speeds. Whats your point? Unless u are talking about a auto ls1. And then, i still cant see it happening but u've got a better chance.

And nothing is impossible...i just think that the LS1 has to have a lot of crap holding it back for it to be possible. Terrible driver. A TON of extra weight. A automatic tranny.

Dont take my post as a flame, its just when u compare your car to theirs....its a 300rwhp LS1 vs. a 220-230rwhp stang? And i think thats being very generous with your power. Thats like saying a h/c/i 5.0 wont be able to beat u to 100. Lol...if thats true then everyone is wasting their money.

Do u know details of this trans am?

Same track, basically same conditions my 99 Z28 and 95 Mustang GTS.

1. I am an average driver
2. I removed driver differences by being the driver on both cars.

Yes the Mustang beat the Z but at a ton of work to do so.
Bolt on a set of Drag Radials to the Z, the results would change again.

Take it or leave it as you will. This is about the most factual and realistic test I can imagine.

same track, controlled enviroment.
same driver.
same weather conditions.

I just think that so often it comes down to driver.

Anyway, who cares. All these ifs and what ifs. I only run mine for personal satisfaction. I have never street raced. I choose not to modify my LS1. The 5.0 is easier to work with to a point, but not really that much for an experieced gear head. Mod for mod the LS1 will win everytime.

I love the sound an muscular look of the Stang, the blvd bruiser. The LS1 is a fierce highway car. Tell me of a stock 5.0 that easily runs up to 160 on an open road, they closest car was the 95 Cobra R.

I agree.

Actually, I definatly think he could take a LT1 (close, but yeah he could probably take one). An LS1 is COMPLETLY different. Some people don't realize the difference between the two. They think the difference is just the ~30 hp rating or so difference. LT1's can be had by very lightly modded 5.0's, and IMO are overrated from my experiences with them. LS1's on the other hand are animals. And when modded, they are very fast. Without a H/C/I car or close to it, your in trouble.

Who knows

You guys may be right. Maybe it was an LT1, and maybe he just had WS-6 badges on it,kinda like alotta GT's have Cobra emblems. I was just stating what happened. Or maybe he was toying with me who knows. But i have only had the car for 3 months. Give me six more and i will hopefully be smoking vettes. Can you guys tell me if it is better to put h/c/i on the 302 or to just drop in a 351 ? I mean which one would be better in the end? I mean in the acceleration game its all about cubic inches, right?! And besides, how often do you pull up against an LS1 (on the street)? I like smoking rice burners!!!! And nmcgrawj, just being honest i think you need to look in to purchasing an ls1,lol. But on a serious note I love mustangs no matter win or lose.

Besides, why worry about beheamoths like LS1's - it's when you get beaten by a little white Colt that you need to address the concerns:

like my old completely street legal car [email protected]:

http://www.msport.co.nz/4images/albums/userpics/monster/mycage.mpg

Anyway, back on-topic - to beat a stock LS1 we need to be pushing 255hp at the flywheel which would bring us on par in the power:weight stakes, although weight reduction is where our cars will really come into their own.

My 02 Z28 M6 in factory stock form with 16K on the clock ran a 12.99@109 with a horrible 2.01 60' on the stock goodyears hunting for traction through first and most of second. The dyno at this point was 315/333

With a lid and catback and better tires I ran a 12.68@110 with a 1.94 on better stock size tires. Power at this times was 326/341

I now have a very mild Z06 cam in it and 275's on 18" heavy ass Boyds and I have yet to run it because of the winter but I would expect with the cam and better rubber even though they are heavy I should turn 12.2 or better. If it wasnt for my weak ass rear end I would put slicks on it and run hig 11's like my friend chris in his 01 Z28.

My 86 Mustang kills my Camaro off the line and through the 1/4 mile, it runs low 11's and makes about 440 rwhp. The mustang on the highway has nowhere near the top end grunt of the LS1 due to gears and from a 60-100 roll we are almost even, the mustang about 1-2 car lead at the begining with the camao at the bumper at 100.

You have to remember all LS1's are not created equal, my times are somewhat unique althought there are many people that have duplicated or beat my times. The A4 launches sick and is easy on the rear so it takes more power to break it. The M6 traps higher and is a highway beast but you cant preload the suspension much to get a great launch.

All years are not equal and not to go into too many specifica the 01-02 models are the fastest from the factory and have the most power.

Modded is a different story, my buddy has a built 346 (LS1) with a 2 stage shot and he runs 9.30's on slicks and a no interior car with a 3 speed auto. He is almost full weight and has a lot more to do like K-member and lexan windows...etc.

I have had one really close race with a guy in florida on the higway. It was on 02 stang with a v2 and 4.30's he said. From 60-120 I only had a car on him when I was stock and I only won because of his gearing and how often he had to shift.

LS1's are tough but not as unbeatable as you think!! If you have a well set up suspension and know how to launch you can get a great jump and as long as your not running the full 1/4 you should beat him with some mods if its a light to light street race.

Good luck it does take money to beat stock LS1's and lots of money to beat modded ones.

Get an 03/04 Cobra, pulley and be done with it!!!!
