Whats better in a 5 speed: 3.73 or 4.10

I am adding gears within a week and I have had 3.73's in another 95 stang but want to know if anyone has run 4.10's with a 5 speed. My car is a 95 Cobra and I plan on getting the hp up around 300 within a year. What is the best option for ET's? I love the 3.73's but maybe the 4.10s will launch a little faster? Maybe slower on the ET's though.

Thanks

i read some where bout maybe having to much gear like a 4.10. something bout giving you a higher launch ratio. they you should want a launch ratio around 9-11. If i remember correclty has to do with ratio of the first gear in the tranny and the ratio of the gears in the rear-end. if i find the site i will post it.

All I know is my launch right now is SLOWWWWWWW. And, that's coming from a cobra. I know I need gears. I am going to open up the exhauset and intake this week but the gears are IMPORTANT. I can't ignore that and the 3.08's suck! Maybe I will call Randys ring and pinion unless someone has a better site. I have bought from Randys before for a truck but not for a car. Ideas?

I have 3.73's and I think they are too much, but my engine makes too much torque as it is.. My biggest beef is that I am very close to having to shift into fifth at the end of the 1/4 that is not very good at all. I would go with 3.27's or 3.55's if i had to do it again. Great compromise gear IMO.

With 3.08 my launch SUX. The 3.73 were nice but I was just asking opinions before I swiched out the gears. I don't think I would go any lower than 3.73 at the low HP I have right now. I think I am going to go with 3.90's and if they suck, I guess I will just have to change them. I have not built my motor yet so getting off the line is important to me right now. Within a week I will have about 50 HP in Bolt ons (waiting for my Mustang to get out of the body shop) and then I will actually decide if I need higher gears or what. I think I will take it to "test and tune" at Gateway raceway to get a base line before changing anything. I just need that exhaust changed and a bigger TB/MASS AF. Too much restriction. My friend told me the other day that my stock 5.0 is faster than my stock cobra. Althogh I have MANY bolt ons on the Mustang. Unfortunatly some biznitch hit my stang! boo hoo

Your diff ratio multiplies the torque at the wheel, so the steeper you go, the more twisting force at the wheel, the only thing is that it will be moving slower, your trading speed for torque. Potential vs. Kenetic energy. A gear becomes too steep when you end up running out of gear before the end of the race. With a steeper gear you will be shifting more also. A steeper gear will cause your engine to revv higher at lower speeds, which might be less than desirable on a long trip. Gas milege might not be as good but who cares about MPG when your open throttle side by side in a race.

That is what I am trying to compromise. You hit the nail on the head. I would love to have a push button selector to select gears but.... yeah right. So unless I have a 9 inch and a pit crew and 5 different sets of gears, I will just have to settle for one ratio. So, I drive 99.9 % on the road, .01 % at the track. What is the best? I think I like the 3.73's like I have in my Mustang as opposed to anything that would limit my top end. Concur?

Well trutch be told gas mileage with 373 and 410 is not to much of a difference. If you get a speed cal your MPH and RPM wont be off. I dont do to bad with 410's as far as gas goes. And yes it is my daily driver ,but then again if you race more on the highway then on the track then i would say go with 373. But if not then go with 410.I love the 410 you could always get a 6 SPEED tranny easier said then done huh

DONT FEAR THE GEAR!!!!

I'm not worried about gas milage. My job is 3 miles away. I want some power to the wheels so I can smoke out but I also want to go to the track and pull down a good ET with what I have (tranny wise). I am just worried that the 4.10's will be too much top end. I would love 4.10's in my truck (if I still had one) but the stang? What will that do for an ET if I take it to the track VS. 3.73's. I gotta have an advantage. I want speed and top end. What about 3.90's That is in betweeen but not a Ford gear.

Build your motor and you'll realize you don't need 4:10 s. Go with a 3:55 or 3:73 at most. With a built motor and 4:10s you won't be able to shift fast enough. And a six speed tranny won't help you since all they really did was put a gear between 4th and 5th. The final drive ratio isn't that much different.

My car...

3.73's = 13.teens @ 102-102.5mph w/ mid 1.7 60's.
4.10's = 12.nines @ 103.5-104 w/ low 1.7 60's.

4.10's do not make 1st useless.
either gear will show you 150mph... how fast do you need to go?

If my car was a daily freeway commuter, I'd have wished I'd stayed with the 3.73's. The extra 3-400 rpm at 75-80mph isn't where I'd want to be.
However, it's not a freeway commuter, it's an around town and race track toy. For what I use the car for, I'd never switch back to 3.73's.

how high your lookin to spin the motor should have an influence on what gear you should go with.

I always got way worse milage lugging around in a higher gear in town vs. just letting it rev at about 2500ish.
