What's stupid about this thread is that you guys keep talking about LS1-powered trucks. Unless I'm nuts (which is debatable), there is no such thing as a LS1-powered truck unless somebody did an engine swap. LS1's are only used in cars. The GM truck lines use the Vortec engines which are a completely different group of engines.
And as for the 700R4 trans, they "CAN BE" very solid if built correctly.

All late model chevy small blocks were an LS1. I '00 (and a couple '99s) and newer V8 trucks are LS1s. Some are aluminum block, some are iron. Either way, they are really nice trucks, and incredible powerplants. A regular cab short bed 2wd with a 5.3 and some bolt ons would be a sweet truck, and definitely run with a stock 5.0. My coworker's cousin has an extended cab, 5.3 stock longblock with a turbo that he has beaten a Z06 with. Car Craft magazine just built a 6.0L iron block LS1 out of a junkyard truck. With a stock shortblock, a set of $1k GM L92 heads, a mild cam, and an msd carb conversion it made 550 fwhp.

As far as the 700r4 goes, yeah, it's junk from the factory just like every slushbox. But, when built properly they can handle a lot of abuse.

Oh, and your thread isn't stupid, there's just a lot of ignorant people on here that can't deal with the word Chevy.

My story: Actually did something similar. (Advice to follow.) Had a Fox body mustang 5.0 5-Spd. Had my dad's old truck. The old truck gave out and the miles were piling up on the Mustang (200K+). My thought, "Hey, why not replace both with one?" Sold off the old truck and bought a 2003 Dodge Dakota 5.9 R/T. (Looked at Ford Lightnings, too big and too much $$$, or so I thought).

Now the Dak's were known for performance right off the showroom floor, plus there was a big aftermarket following. (Sound familiar?) So, after driving the new Dak for all of about two weeks, I parked it in the garage and went back to the Mustang for my daily driver. Ended up just using the Dak to haul stuff. Story summary: NO truck will replace a sports car.

Advice: DON'T DO IT ! ! ! ! !

Sorry...I didnt realize everyone was so touchy when someone brings up the LS1. When I said I love mustangs that sorta means that I would never replace one with a truck, a mustang is a mustang and nothing will replace it. But where is fords answer to the LS1 trucks?

Come on man, now thats just a silly statement. If you were purchasing a new lightning a few years ago then you would have paid $30,000-$33,000

The SS Chevy trucks were priced where? $30,000- $33,000

Alright, now this is also to finish off you statement about special edition.
Chevy had the Silverado, they even have models turbo charged and then dropped the LS1 in there to compete. If anything this fits under "special edition"
its the SS.

Learn what? The site doesn't list trucks because they are not considered LS motors by GM. They call the truck engines Vortec. Either way, they are of the same design, and parts are interchangeable, so it's the same engine as far as I'm concerned.

lightings are not a super expensive truck by any means......and there are plenty of fast ones that can tear up gms on the road

That's an incorrect statement.
There are several different Vortec engines with their basic designs ranging from Gen 1 to Gen 4 small blocks. To make a blanket statement as you did only shows how little you know about GM engines. Yes, there ARE some shared parts between many Chevy small blocks but to say that means they're all the same is ludicrous at best. Hell, some early Harley-Davidson engines had Chevy engine parts in them, does that mean that Harley engines are the same as Chevy small blocks too?
Bottom line, my statement stands. LS1 engines are NOT supplied in Chevy trucks.
