Whats the process of changing wheel studs?

Whats the process of changing studs? Do I have to take off the rear axles to take those off? Are the fronts a pain? I'm putting longer ones on so they obey the NHRA rule book, I got in trouble at california speedway because they didnt come out at least a quarter inch passed the lugnut hehhee. Thanks

All you do is hammer them out... A couple good whacks with a 3 lbs sledge, and they will pop right out. I use a wheel stud installation tool, but you can use a very large nut, and a SPARE lug nut. Just put the stud in, put the big nut on, then thread the correct SPARE lug nut, and use an impact gun to pull the stud into the splines. Usually after a couple studs, though, the nut becomes a little too screwed up to use again. Make sure to go slow... Hit it a little at a time with the impact gun to keep the heat down in the stud/lug. Too much heat, and the threads will start coming apart. If you have no impact gun, take it to a shop, and they shouldnt' charge too much.. Maybe 50-100 bucks to change all the studs on the car. Hope this helps.
