whats the trick to removing the studs from the stock upper?

I need the studs that the TB and EGR spacer use on my stock upper.. how can I go about removing the studs? I was to get one stud out with the method of tightening one nut against the other but didn't pan out soo well for the other four studs.. so is there an easy way to do this?

The two nut method worked for the first stud but the nuts began to get rounded off which caused me to put the tools down and ask

Thought about vise grips but figured they would mess up the threads

I think I gave up and fabricated what I needed for the swap. A few bolts from the hardware store will do the trick, or you could get some threaded rod and cut it to size.

vice grips worked for me, just be careful because they can mess up the threads.

Stick with the two-nut method, and use a proper-sized wrench (not a Crescent) or, if nothing else, a sturdy Vise Grip on the nut (not the stud, itself). Add a few squirts of PB Blaster. If it still won't budge, add heat, then spray with PB Blaster so it sucks it into the threads. If it STILL doesn't come out ... resort to using plastic explosives.

hahah I think platique may be the way to go but im going to try the pb blaster and heat method first

remove the EGR spacer and vice grip the stud where there are no threads -and heat the aluminum on the side of the upper intake stud with a propane torch as you crank on the vice grips. If water has been seeping into the studs as they often do, you've got rusted in place studs.

everybody else pretty much covered it but I take off the tb and egr spacer, if it's not rusted in place....spray in some PB, get a good bite on the stud itself with vice grips and add heat if it still doesn't come off.....ive had to use a mixture of pb, heat, flathead and a big hammer to wedge the tb and egr plate off before from the coolant seizing everything together.

if the seepage was bad enough to rust the EGR spacer in place on the stud, it can sometimes become a boat anchor.

Haven't had time to jerk with it more yet but the tb and egr spacer have been separated from the upper without any problems.. it's the studs that aren't coming out but I didn't get a chance yet to use a torch on it yet.
