whats wrong with my t-5?

took my 90 lx to the track on the weekend, when i tried to shift into 2nd at anything over 4000 rpms it wouldnt go in, i figure its the syncros, anyone else have any ideas? its a stock t-5, the car has a cobra intake, gt-40 heads, b 303 cam, 24# inj, 73mm maf, 65mm tb and long tubes, soon to have bmr upper and lower ctrl arms and a 4.10 gear also it has moroso solid motor mounts. My other question is: is it wirth re-building the t-5 or will i just end up breaking it anyway?

Sounds like the synchros are going. Stock t5s seem to be hit or miss. A lot of people have kept them together with over 300hp, but mine broke behind a stock motor. A lot of it is in how you drive. If you have the money, rebuild it with a g-force or Astro Performance gearset.

G-force or astro can support upwards of 600hp or more. I belive you can get new syncros (everything that would come in a T-5 rebuild kit) if you go this way your looking at maybe $1000 plus for the gears and new parts. not including who rebuilds the t-5, unless you do it yourself. Some astro/G-force gears will not fit with regular t-5 gears, its because the added thickness of the gears and teeth count. hope that helps.

5.0 mag just did a t-5 build with Astro stuff in their latest issue if you wanna check it out. The gearset alone from both companies is a tad over $1k. Add in synchros, a clutch for the new 26 spline input shaft, and other odds and ends, and you will easily spend $2k. I will be doing something like this very soon considering my t5 is spread out all over my garage floor. It's just hard to decide what to go with...

The T5 is a typical weak point. I broke mine after about 1000 miles after I did my H/I/C. Some people have great luck with them but if you shift hard or get some traction off the line, you are typically on borrowed time. The base gforce kit is 1100 dollars if you rebuild it yourself. Once you add in a couple upgrades to handle 600ish hp, you will probably be looking at 1600 dollars of parts and still have to put it together yourself.

Do a Tremec TKO and be done with it. No doubts about how long it will last or how hard it may be to rebuild. The cost is probably the same within a few bucks. All the TKO 500 (TCET4615) needs is a new bellhousing and yoke and you are good to go for 500 HP.

I have a Tremec 3550 and have over 7 years and 100K miles and it still shifts smooth and fast. Keep them filled with the right lubricant and don't try to shift without the clutch and they are bulletproof. Find someone who can say the same thing about their 100K mile G-Force or Astro T5. There just aren't any.

To do a TKO I know you'll need a clutch and shifter, but other than that all you need is a bell housing and yoke? I thought I heard something about the crossmember... If it's that simple I might be leaning that way.

i just got my tKO600 from D and D performance. I got tko 600, bellhoung and clutch sent to my door for a littl over 2300 bucks. You need to buy a 31 spline yoke and you REUSE stock crossmember. Grind off the 2 tak welds and slide it back (it is adjustable) and re weld. BOOM! done. comes with treemec shifter base. You dont need to buy one
buy one and youll need surgery to remove the smile on your face when you come home from work and find this box at your doorstep

Use the TKO 500 (TCET4615) and you get a 10 spline input shaft that allows you to use the stock clutch disk. The all you need is the bellhousing and trans yolk. The shifter comes with the trans and the crossmember gets modified.

If you are going to replace the clutch, then get a TKO 500 or 600 that uses a 26 spline input shaft.
