wheel and tire suggestions

Hi all, I'm about to make a purchase on a new set of wheels and tires. What are some combos you guys feel are the best? I'm pretty sure my '66 has a 9 inch rear end. Does that affect the backspacing you can have on wheels?

I currently have 14x6 wheels right now :( So i think anything other than that will be a step in the right direction!

Any comments will be appreciated!

If you are not sure about the rear end it is most likely an 8 inch. Try Dodgestang.com for a great list of wheels and tires used on different mustangs. And what modifications, if any, were needed to fit them.

is there like a quick way to tell what my rear end is? the guy i bought the car from mentioned it had a 9 inch on it. the transmission was rebuilt so its possible that it was changed or something. i've looked at dodgestang.com and its really helpful :) but i'm still abit nervous about getting some wheels and they won't fit lol.

Get yourself a straigtedge and a tape measure and take some measurements are the only way to be sure. Following others peoples info is great for ideas/reccomendations but If there is any doubt the trusty tapemeasure should clear anything up.

well, i measured the rims on there right now, they have either a 3.5" or 3.75" backspace, and that seemed small to me for a '66 mustang, but what the hell do i know lol.

anyways, about the rear end, how do i tell what kind i have? 8 inch or 9 inch.

that sounds about normal for a mustang (back spacing)

for the rear end you need to slide under the rear part of the car (trunk area) and measure how big the "bubble" is. is the shape a circle? or more of an oval?

okay just went measured. i think its definately a 9 inch...more of an oval then a circle.

thanks for your help by the way, i'm a n00b when it comes to things such as this.

I'm looking at 16x7 cragar s/s wheels , standard offset , with 3.5" backspacing. Do you reckon those will work out alright?

Cheers again :D

To see if it's a 9", slide underneath and look at the lowest right bolt when looking head on at the carrier. If you can get a deep well socket on it- it's an 8". If you have to use a wrench- it's a 9.

I've got a set of Vintage Wheel Works 48 series, got them for $670 to my door cause they were 'cosmetically blemished'. Couple cans of wheel paint and I was set.
