In tyler's defense... I believe most impacts are rated off of a 1/2" hose, so they don't produce 'quite' the amount of torque using the 3/8" hose most of us have.
Other than that, I'll normally impact them on for a sec and then either torque them to the right spec or if I'm in a rush put it on FMPFT (Fat Man Pretty Freakin Tight)

Back to the Sears thing. My son took his 02 Mustang to Sears for an alignment and tire rotation even after I warned him not to go there. Yup, they overtorqued the wheels. I couldn't even break the lug nut with a breaker bar and extension. I had him take it back and had them torque it down correctly. Many months later, we were replacing his brakes and one of the studs on the front hub cracked as we were taking the lug nut off. Two lug nuts on the back gave my impact air wrench and real workout trying to get them off. Please excuse me if I don't use Sears Automotive again.

Is it still wrong to use the impact wrench just to get the lug nuts on there snug by tightening in a star pattern? I usually snug the lug nuts down and bust out the torque wrench and start at 50 and work my way up...

I'd say if you're going to use an air tool to snug down the lugs, I would use a regular 3/8's air ratchet instead of an impact wrench. just a little safer
That sounds ok to me as long as you're getting some rotation of the lug nut before you reach the desired torque. The problem is more with shops that are not taking proper care with the final torque. They will use the same gun and settings for all lug nuts and that is just not right!stangman16 said:

You can get the torque specific extensions, they will not allow more then x number of ft lbs of torque to be transferred to what ever it is that you're using them on. It's a pretty nifty idea. Those would keep you from over tightening the lugs and allow you to use a torque wrench to get the desired foot lbs.
