Wheel Lock Key, am I screwed?

OK, after doing the brakes last week I got all the wheels back on and torqued, now I can't find the key to retourque the wheeels anywhere. This is a factory wheel lock from a 99 GT. Can I get one from Ford or do I just need to remove these and either replace them or stay away from them?

i'm pretty sure you can get one from ford. give it a shot.

I had to chizzle (chissle? (sp?)) my old one off and replace the nut and lug.

If it's anything like my 95 or my Ford dealership, fat chance of getting one there. As far as I have been informed there are around 25 different keys for a 95 and they aren't VIN coded, it is a random shot which one you got. Unless your dealership happens to have a ton on hand that you can just check and check.

My teanage dawd lost her lock key once upon a time

My tire guy lived around the corner and stopped by for the fix.

He took a socket that would barely fit over the hed of the nut, put it on a 6" half inch ext, and hammered it on the locking nut.

Came off easy as pie

if you need a quick fix buy a new set of locks from a tire place, or even sears. theyll even remove your old ones for $3-4 a piece with their special tool

Grady, thanks I have heard of the socket trick before and I guess that is what I'll be going with.

Now I guess the decision is whether or not it is worth protecting my 1999 GT wheels with new locking lug nuts...

Did you try your local Ford dealer??? My local Ford dealer had a master set...They let me take it to the parking lot and have at it...

When I first bought mine I seen this weird socket in the glove box??? Being a drone I just chucked it any never thought twice about it...Well a yr later come inspection time the tech asked for the wheel lock.. It finally dawned on me what I threw out.... I had never taken the cap off the wheel to notice it had factory locks...
The tech wanted to chisel it off...He looked like a rookie so I said I don't think so....

The Ford dealership should have a master set. At honda we have a master set for all the kinds Honda puts on. As for getting a new key for yourself, they should be able to tell what kind you need from the master set.

Otherwise any tire store can take them off for a couple buck a piece.

If you do the socket method yourself, ya might want to use a lifetime warranty socket.

I would put locks on any wheels ya got, but that's just me.
What wheels do you have?

It's easy...I had the same problem and htought I was screwed.

Use a SLIGHTLY bigger socket and hammer it on with a rubber mallet, then I used an impact wrench. Came off no problemo.

If you go to a Ford place, they will do a service write up, take the car in the back and then come back and tell you which key you need, in the meantime charging you for an hour service, plus the cost of a new key...BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!

it actually is VIN coded...when i had my balljoint done last year, the shop lost my key, so i told them and they asked for my VIN number and got me a new key...works perfectly...

i'd say get rid of them when you get them off. There are three problems with them that i can see. one, if its that easy to take them off with the tool(which snap-on sells) or the socket trick, a good theif could easily get them off. Two, if you lose it, you have to buy another one. three, they are a anyoing as hell when you are taking off your rims.

if there were another method i would look into that if you are that worried about getting them stolen.

I guess if I ever lose my keys .... I am screwed, lol. I have the "Bullitt" lugnuts. They ALL require a key .... and a dealership WILL NOT have it. Nor will a Sears .... or tire shop. And the socket trick will not work because the way they're designed. I keep my keys in a safe location that I will remember.

You may be able to buy another as a spare so long as you have PROOF of owning the first one, ie show them the one you have.

Well i wasn't able to do the socket trick, but I was able to strong arm and visegrip two of them off last night... not sure if it was my hands getting weak or what but the last two I couldn't get. So i am torn between modifying an old socket to work as a key or having someone pull them off...

As the lock came with the wheels I bought off a guy in cincinatti (stock 99 gt wheels) I don't have all of the info needed to get the key matched easily and my dealership is a PITA... so I'll figure something out to get the last 2 off....

I wanna make it clear there is nothing gentle to this method

Impact socket & five pound hammer

Beat that bad boy on the lug and then turn

You gotta get some grip

I don't think a rubber hammer is gonna cut it

Well i got it last night.. I used a socket that barely fit over the wheel locks then hammered it on with a piece of 1/4" wide by about .050" thick shim in there to tighten up the fit and it worked perfectly.

When I was trying jsut the hammer technique i was using a 24oz framing hammer and it jsut wasn't able to get the socket on enough... but I did ruin a couple of extensions and one socket... looks like I am going baack to sears....
