Wheel LOCKS!!!!!

i have some rims to put on but the rear wheels have lock nuts and the guy didnt give me the key, i called him up today and he says he doesnt have it.

any ideas on getting these off? already tried vice grips and a hammer... no dice.

Were those wheels off of the guys old car that he still has? There is a sticker on the car, I think mine is in the trunk, that tells the key serial number. You can bring that to a dealer and get a new one. If that doesn't work....TORCH!!!!

I've never tried it, but I was told years ago that you can pound a socket onto the wheel lock and get the the locks off. I've seen kits just for that purpose, but I expect it has special sockets.

im pretty sure parts stores sell the special fit lug wrench end for the locks: napa, autozone, advanced, etc...if not than tire dealers should or how would they get wheels off? just take the car there and ask if you can borrow it real quick and undo it in the parking lot.

Yes, the socket trick works as long as you can get it on over the lock. And I used Craftsman ones. I was able to use one to remove 3 of my locks, but it was too worn for the fourth. Got a free replacement and pulled the fourth one off!

Im not sure Im following. You have rims to put on your car, but you cant figure out how to get the locknuts off? Whose friggin car is it? Is it something you bought like a rolling chassis or something? I only ask because about 6 months ago a kid came to our garage asking if he could borrow a locksocket from our master set and bring it back the next day. We said no and a tech told him to use a socket over it or a bolt out kit. The next day when we came to work the Ford dealer in the next town had two of its Mustangs bullit style rims jacked. Gotta watch out for stuff like that.

They make a special socket that is cone-shaped/tapered inside that can be forced down on a lug nut and used with an air ratchet. That's basically the equivalent of the "hammer the closest fitting socket down on it" method described above. I also had wheel locks seized on the studs, and the local Pep Boys guys got them off by repeatedly hitting them at an angle with an air chisel to bap them off little by little. If you can get on them, a nut splitter might help, although there may not be room. I have also heard of tack-welding a nut on there, so a regular wrench can be used.

Yeah, if the locking lugs are not damaged at this point, a dealer or tire shop should be able to remove them (they usually keep a ring of lock keys around).

i bought some rims for my car, the back wheels have locknuts and the front ones dont, the car didnt come with a key. follow?

I think you could also take it to les schwabe and they might take them off for you. I think they have the keys to most wheels.

the socket method failed im gonna end up taking it to a tire place i guess, i split 3 sockets and wore myself out from hammering so much.

use one of those 4 star lug wrenches, and get u some WD40 or PB blaster and get u something to sit the wrench on so u can use ur body weight. I did that to get my luck nuts off.

I have a wheel lock removal kit, I think you can get something at Sears (craftsman) that will work but I am not sure. A shop will usually only charge about $10 a lock to remove.

Tire stores won't have the keys to most wheels. They use a lock removal kit that they hammer onto the wheel lock. There's literally hundreds of different patterns for those locks.

Guess I was wrong I know a friend of mine took his there and they got them off somehow.

Agreed, talk to the service Dept. If you agree to buy the replacement lugnuts from them,they'll probably let you take the old ones off and put the new ones--probably $1.25 each-- on for free. If they don't, I would consider that a poor customer/employee ralationship and move on to the next dealership for all my business.

If you're not worried about the locks, take off any protruding center caps and get a small pipe wrench. Works well.
