Wheel Stud Replacement Procedure??

I need to replace a cross threaded wheel stud and was wondering what the procedure is. Will I need to remove the entire hub or can it be manuvered out with the hub in place? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have done without removing the hub, pound the old one out, you may have to rotate the hub to acheive maximum clearance, then slide the new one in and i use a open end lug nut, aka acorn nut with some washers and tighten it all the way down to sinch the new stud into place, you have to giude it in as you do it. loosen the nut and your all set.

It will work, but I prefer to take the hub off and use a hydraulic press because I don't like impact loading the bearings.

Wow, Scott really likes bearings. :)

I would note that swapping one stud is no biggie in all probability. I would not want to swap all the studs or anything like that w/o having it on the bench though.

I've found that an impact chiesel with a blunt point bit will punch them out cleanly. If you have ABS brakes, you may have to cut the stud prior to extraction in order to clear the pick-up gear. To insert a new stud, you may have to grind a flat spot on the gear to get the stud in postion. If you don't have ABS, you're good to go with the procedures outlined in other threads. Good Luck!

:nice: Well I removed that bad stud with no problems at all and I didn't have to remove the caliper. I just rotated the assembly until the stud lined up with an open space in the dust shield and tapped it out. I put the new one in through the same space and used several washers and a lug nut to pull it snug. Thanks again for everyone's input. Hopefully this thread will help someone in the future!
