After I finally removed all of the aftermarket undercoating on my '78 Ghia, I found a layer of blue-green textured coating about 1/8" thick. Does anyone know what this stuff is? Specifically, is it a plastic, urethane, etc?

Also, its cracked in places revealing sheetmetal underneath and some rust. Is there a comparable product I could use to replace it?

Thanks.

Take care of the rust area then coat the area with some type of rust preventive (por 15, rust bullet) then treat the area with the spray on bed liner material. If you don't want to use the bed liner you can always use the regular undercoating. What ever way you go, take care of the rust.

I guess I'll pick up a can of Eastwood's "Rubberized Undercating" to test. It doesn't sound much like what I'm seeing from the factory, but it's all I've seen so far.

I really like the idea of the 2-part bedliner, but I don't really plan to completely strip the wheel wells. I don't think that bedliner would work well in situations where you are spot-treating the area.

After years of laying under this Ghia scraping undercoating, sanding rust, applying rust converter, priming, and painting, my Cobra is going up on a rotissery and is going to be sandblasted, primed and painted all in one week! Then I'll coat the wheel wells with bedliner.

3M has a great website where you can search for products. A search for undercoatings turned up "Paintable Ruberized Undercoating":

Dyna-Pro(R) Paintable Rubberized Undercoating

Whatever it is, it's from Hell.

A torch is about the only way I can figure to remove it.

It will come right off the rust.

I would use the 2 part bed liner material.

{edit} I think sand blasting is pretty ineffective against that coating from Hell.{/edit}
