Where to find vintage plates???

Rent-A-Racer,

Are you still living in Texas? I can see if I can find my friend who deals in these things for you. I'm not sure it he has any new sets of plates anymore as they have become quite rare in NOS condition, but he usually has some decent used sets that can be restored to a condition that the Texas DPS will accept for use on a classic vehicle. In Texas the only way to legally run only a rear plate is to use a dealer tag....that is why I have the dealer tag.

I live in Kentucky, but I purchased the car from a guy in Texas. (Whichita Falls, I believe.) I flew down just to look at the car. My wife thought I was nuts. (It the car in the avitar pic).

say u get a set of vintage plates for the state that you live in. Louisiana, in my case. can you legally run those plates on the car? or is that not possible? only for front vanity plates? I think it'd be awesome to have some vintage plates instead of the new ones. :)

Here in Oregon you can usually find vintage plates at swapmeets. They run anywhere from $50-$200 depending on age and usage. You can also buy them from some wrecking yards. I bought a real nice set for my Pinto in December for $25 from the local u-pull it. A little wax and they looked almost brand new. Good luck.

I'm not sure about all states but in Texas you can use original issue Texas plates that match the year of manufacture of your vehicle as your normal plates. You can use these plates forever and never have to change them like you do with the ones the state provides. You have the option to register normally or there are several options for classic registration....but you can run vintage plates for all options.

You have to fill out some paperwork and take the plates you want to use to certain offices so they can photocopy them and check condition and send the info off to Austin for approval. I have never had a problem with this process.

I'm not sure about any other states but a simple call to your local DMV should answer your questions....good luck.

We can run the old plates here in NY as long as we have the right sticker. I found my plates at a swap meet. I looked on ebay for a while but couldnt pass up these with the 289. I cant use them because I need classic insurance which I cant get yet.

i really want the black and yellow 67 california plates for my 67 .how do u get them? And can u get them from the DMV?

You definately can't get them through DMV. In fact, they wanted to take mine and replace them with new "reflective" plates. I went through 2 people and a supervisor before they relented.

If you are a AAA member try going through them for info
