My 331 stroker will be one of the new 5.0 roller blocks with AFR 185 heads and a new AOD. I searched the forum/header chart and I'm still not sure. For headers that will clear, could I order the Hedman Elites (Hooker comps or?) for a 351W application like Edbert and Geostang? Does anyone know if they will clear my 67' OE power steering system (likely be swapped out with a power R&P in the future)? Also, I'll planning on the Magnaflow, 2.5 stainless catback exhaust system with X pipe if it matters.

when i did the swap the 351W headers come down too far to run the power steering. i raised the block using 1" spacers on the motor mounts which helped but finally had to remove the power steering do to the headers cooking the seals in the lower unit.

what are your performance goals and intended rpm? 1 5/8" are fine for the street. Maybe 1 3/4" if you intend to rev it high (6500 rpm or higher). In either case the 351 headers will hang down lower and interfere with the power steering more, as well as ground clearance.

1 5/8 tubes are fine with me since it's a 331 stroker but from my research the only headers that seem to fit a 302 or 351 with an AOD seem to be headers for a 351W application and thats with Hedman Elites and maybe Hooker comps. Then you through in the extra pain about my stock power steering and its even more unknown. My whole goal is to research and do it right the first time but as we all know it's tough to get it all right especially with me since I'm swapping everything all at once.

Like I mentioned, I was thinking about a power R&P down the road which could be my saving grace with this header issue if I do the R&P now too but my $$$ flow will be in the dumps. I'm set on the 2.5 Magnaflow stainless with X pipe system which is designed to interface with longtubes so shorty's and customs aren't an option for me due to the rework and expense that would to be involved.

Other ideas/suggestions are appreciated, looks like I'll have a unique one for the header chart in a few months.

Hedman 88300 or the elite's 88308 should work no problem.

67GTCOUPE, have you used either one of those headers? Any clearance or fit issues? Thx...

I would give these guys a call.

http://www.fordpowertrain.com/FPAindex/headers1.htm

More than likley what I will be using with my 331 / T5. They have step headers if you want them. Ball and socket collectors are standard. Work with R&P and clutch cables (although you don't need that). They hang much higher than hookers too.

Yes I have used the 88300, and I just bought a set of 88308 which are the elite series.

They are WICKED!!!! Highly recommend the elite hedmans, very very nice and they are only $265.00 at summit/jegs.

Those headers from Headman are more for the 351 swap and as we know that engine is taller and slightly wider combined with the exhaust port face angle, its a whole new ballgame with the 302 so I'm still not sure if those will work. I've also decided to do the TCP power R&P which will eliminate the OE power steering and gearbox to make more room for the headers

Anyone running late model 302/AOD with specific knowledge of which "off the shelf " long tube headers will work in a 67 FB"

Thanks for your tips guys. A special thanks to S-Car-Go for the ford powertrain tip, they have my solution.

I spoke to Stan (owner) of FPT, super knowledgable, precise and helpful. You'll have more ground clearance with thier long tube header than any others. For me it was with no restrictions, no adaptors and better quality 16 gauge construction (hooker who? with thier tin cans and street scraping collectors for big bucks). Sorry to bash but I'm still a little peaved at them and Hedman with their lawyer scripted responses to my basic questions. They had no intention of wanting to help out the customer to make a sale and were just going through the paces so they could get to the next call and likely not help him either.

Those big guys can really learn alot from a guy like Stan, maybe they'll buy him out and turn him into a millionaire which would be great for him if thats what he wants. I usally prefer to spend my money with the little guy anyway and as an added bonus FPT is right here in my backyard - in case of issues. Now granted they are not cheap either, $695 with ceramic coating but they are high quality, heavy gauge, no mods with the best ground clearance available for a total solution and likely the last headers I'll buy for that motor. I'll post the installed result in a few weeks.

Others that offered similiar solutions and were there to help and research are FPX, Accufab and JBA.

In my case, I didn't care since I'm going to R&P while were doing the swap. If I remember correctly, I don't think it mattered. Call or check his website to make sure but likely you'll be fine.
