I'm looking for more power; I was starting with a cam and getting stuff to match it, but heads are more expensive and need to match as well, so I'm goin to choose them first. This car is a weekend car for the street. I dont know how much gas mileage I can expect, but I dont really want to change the stall or the carb. I dont really want to change the intake either, but people say the performer RPM is way better. So what heads do you suggest? I'll post a poll with the most popular heads listed, but please reply and tell me why you chose what you did. Thanks!

For your application, I think the RPMs will be great. They make very good power, are cheaper than the very popular AFRs, and have bolt holes that are steel lined and in the stock location.

i voted for the windsor jr's, they would be a better choice for what you're planning if you can't afford the afr 165's all the other heads you ahve posted have too big of a combustion chamber for your 289 and you'll lose a lot of compression, possibly enough even that will be disappointed with them. with those heads i would use a comp extreme energy cam, i can't get onto their site right now, but look for something with 220 degrees duration @.050, with the extreme energycam that should get you around .485-.495 lift at the valve. keep in mind that with any of the heads you have listed you'll have to change most of the valvetrain prices as well, pushrods and all of these heads use the newer style pedestal mount rocker arms or stud mounted rockers, so you'll have to change the rocker arms, and fulcrums as well, so that's another added expense, if you go with stock replacement rockers the cost will be small and you might be able some good used ones from a local machine shop for next to nothing, though.

well i was finally able to get onto comps site, looks like the XE256H-10 would be a good choice. it has .477/.484 lift and 212/218 duration at .050. would be a good match for either the windsor jr's or afr 165's in a mild street car. this won't be a barn screaming combo but will be substantially hotter than a stock 289 and still very streetable with a god idle and decent MPG as well. maybe even better than the stock 289 if you can keep your foot out of it. i would also recommend either a set of tri-y or shorty headers with this combo and it should work well with your stock convertor also.

lovin my 40-p heads, you can pull them off explorers, and if you dont go with a radical cam over .500 lift then they will probably end up the cheapest, however you will need to get some headers to match, and you can modify a cheap set of tri-ys to work, i did and they work beautifully

i have the edelbrock rpm's but if i had the money i would have gone to the AFR's. also rember the AFR's may need some other work done to them to match them to your intake.

like someone else said ...AFR's can't be beat in performance.

edelbrock rpm's are a great buy also!

I voted for the Edelbrock Performer RPM's. Got a pair myself and they really make some great power w/ a mild cam and long tube headers. I'm still running the regular performer intake and a 600cfm holley carb.

As far as price goes, you can get a pair for about 300 dollars cheaper than the AFR's from Summit, so they're a good value.

I have 185 AFR's, which are not a ton better than TFTW's. I voted TFTW because that is what I would put on a smaller 289. They can be had for about $300 less than AFR's and are a little better than 165's.

i only wish the roush 200's came with 58 cc chambers. they are the best deal imo even though they are iron heads. they flow great and are fully assembled and ready to go for way less than afr prices. u could have them machined for 58cc chambers, but then where would u be with cost. decisions decisions. im in the same boat, although i plan on waiting a while before i do new heads.

FWIW, I have a performer, 600 holley, stock cam with 1.7's and the afr 165's..no complaints.. with a stock converter and an auto, you're going to need more bottom end TQ, or the car will suck off the line..

So your running 13.58@102 with that :nice: ? That is basically my engine with AFR165s, right?

IMO the best heads for your money are the Trick Flows, you could get the heads and the Edelbrock RPM intake for the same price as the AFR's. Also, from the various articles I have seen TF's flow better the AFR 165s. Also, I believe the Edelbrock RPM heads have the 2" valves that will not work with stock pistons.
