whining T5 tranny

My step sister bought a 90 fox GT and I saw it yesterday for the first time. And I noticed the tranny was very whiny while driving it...in and outside stang!!

It has an aftermarket short throw shifter. ( Havent had the time to check which one yet)...

It sounds like an airplane engine over 2500 rpms.

Any suggestions on fix??? I have not checked the fluid yet. I am doing that this weekend coming up...

aside from checking the fluid, there isnt much you can do without pulling the trans.

Check if the lower boot is missing, that will transfer alot of noise/heat and make sure the shift stops are properly set up

Ok I will check it all out this weekend....I am checking junk yards for stock shifters to isolate problems

Is it whiny in all gears, or only certain ones?

Don't bother with a JY shifter, if it's not low on fluid, it has to come out, and be checked and probably rebuilt by a professional.
Rarely does whining ever go away without major work, and usually it gets worse and worse until the trans is worth nothing.
