I have a 96 GT convertable, 5spd. When it is cold out, below 40 degrees, the car will whistle on startup. It is defintely under the hood, on the right side. It will go away once the car is warmed up. I upgraded the intake with the factory intake this summer, but it whistled last winter too. I was actually hoping the new intake would solve the problem. The sound doesn't seem to be RPM related.
Any ideas what this is and how to stop it?
TIA

sounds like you have a supercharger hidden somewhere in there.

if so take it off and send it to me. i'll send you a stock intake in its place

Judging by the two posts above me it appears your car has a gatorback belt and a hidden supercharger. Talk about being lucky. That's like finding that $20 bill in an old jacket pocket that hadn't been worn in years.

At least it's more erect and not floppy anymore.

when my idler pulley was ****ed up the noise came after it warmed up, not when it was cold.

P.S. The drive-belt tensioner pulley or idler-pulley bearings are apt to make a squealing noise when the engine is started in cold weather. (1994-96)

My 01 does this and it does when its cold and it does sound like it has a S/C (I guess its kind of like false advertising). I'm think its the idler pulley.

I should change my for sale ad to read "hidden invisible supercharger and disguised goodyear gatorback belts" maybe it will sell faster

Mine had been doing it for about a year now and I have change alternator, idler pulley, belt tensioner , iac valve , egr valve , belt and pcv but still no luck. I have search online and google with no luck. Mine starts around 2000 rpm and when ever I shift I hear a hiss like BOV out of turbo. I have checked all the vacuum but still no luck finding leak

it is either a IAC or the hose and muffler(small plastic box) going to the IAC or both, some of the 4.6's had a TSB on this......
