The econ stimulus checks are totally separate from your normal tax refunds and the most a person can get is $600 ($1200 for married couples) plus $300 per qualifying child.
If he got $18K, hes talking about taxes, the econ stimulus checks have not gone out yet and won't be anything to get too excited over.

I wouldn't worry about SS and especially Medicare being available for you/us unless we have Chinese tanks rolling through downtown DC.
I agree. My wife and I started doing our own taxes a few years ago. The woman who did our family's taxes for years passed away and we didn't want to go to someone new. I'm glad we decided to take a crack at it on our own. It's gets easier and more familiar every year. The part I hate most is getting the receipts together. Every year we say we'll keep them better organized and every year they're scattered all over the place.The best thing about doing your own taxes is that you educate yourself in the process, and knowing what is going on could come in handy someday. Besides, taxes aren't that hard to do anyways, all you gotta do is sit down and read the stuff and fill in boxes.
