Well its about time I put an intercooler on my car. I was originally wanting to put a vortech aftercooler on but after seeing that they are 2500$ I decided I would rather spend less and get an intercooler.

Does anyone sell an intercooler kit that will fit my vortech s trim? Any significant disadvantages between a traditional intercooler and vortech's aftercooler?

The intercooler is actually better and can with stand much higher boost levels and more power. I’ve heard that there is a limit to how much boost you can run through the aftercooler before it is pretty much useless. Also you will see cooler temps going down the road do to the cool air hitting the IC which you don’t get with the after cooler.

What ever it may be I know the one I have Tim from MPH said it’s what they use on their 900rwhp Mustangs. I have the Paxton A/A IC and it bolts right up to the Vortech. You have to modify the discharge tube by cutting it down a little but other than that its perfect.

Its around 1500 and you can make a DIY for even cheaper.

I have one. I made the kit myself form aluminum pipes on ebay, but now they have a kit made for the new edges with vortech circulating around ebay.

about half the cost of piecing it together like I did a year ago, but after buying a bypass valve and flange and stuff it'll be about the same.

I made a thread on my intercooler build, just run a search.

why is it only 250$? I just see something being fishy, i mean why is the paxton IC MPH sells 1500$ and that one only 250$...??

That kit is cheap because its a ebay intercooler. Bennyblown will tell you that the boost drop is pretty bad on those things. I personally would buy a intercooler from a reputable company like spearco and just buy some intercooler pipping of ebay.

MPH also sells DIY cores for only a couple hundred - supposedly "name brand" without the name kinda deal. That $250 is about what I payed I guess, then I also went with a vortech mini race which was like $230 on summit - then about $50 for other parts/couplers from siliconeintakes.com and some steel tubing to weld to my powerpipe. I think I spent about $550 total on everything, then another $50 in extra parts incase anything breaks down the line and a smaller pulley. The core I have holds boost fine, but the pressure drop is pretty steep... But whatever, it works alright.

On the dyno my intake temps were 74-84* hot lapping with my intercooler... Start with the ebay DIY kit and then later on you can upgrade. Some say you dont need to pulley down, but I would... I am running a 3.2" pulley.

Buy QUALITY couplers and T-BOLT CLAMPS! and make sure you roll the tips of the pipe if you cut it!

Ebay Ic here!

The kit for 250 that benny linked comes with better clamps and couplers, unike the one I built 2 years ago from a cheap intercooler and seperate piping kit off of ebay. Now you see everyone doing it. This kit also has most of the work done for you and the pipes are bead rolled.

The pressure drop is not only from being a restrictive. Colder air is more condensed there for it is measured as less psi. So colder air at 10 psi has as much volume as hot air at 12 psi.

Ok,

So lets say I am on a budget of 500$, I want the best intercooler setup I can get for this amount of money. What do you guys who know what your talking about recommend?

Also I am planning on running 9-10psi what size pulley should I get 3.33' or 3.2' ?

Yeah I know, but good point. The problem is the ebay core just has way too much pressure drop overall. Dyno backs this up too - 3.33" pulley it made 423/408 non-ic, then with 3.12" and intercooled it made 404/389. Roughly 2psi difference between the two setups as measured by my boost gauge. I think one thing is for the low amount of boost I'm running, a smaller, but more thermally efficient intercooler would work better - so I would have less volume of air through the intercooler at a given time (less pressure drop across the IC core), but same, or better cooling. I'm putting an 8-rib 2.90" pulley on there right now...and maybe I'll upgrade to a treadstone intercooler like SaleenGT2001 is running.

I still have stock heads, and intake and make over 500 with a small cam. I think my ebay intercooler works fine. My intake tenps where 20* above ambient. There are better less restrictive ic's out there. but for the money this one works well.

At 6200 rpm I see about 12-13 psi ,and by 6400 it's about 15. That's with a 6 rib 2.8" pulley which I know is slipping. I alao have cams and full exhaust.. So with out the lt's and cams say 17 psi. I also have the V1 S-trim which has Less of a step up ratio than the SQ,
