Why 3G?

On the second one I posted would I just match up the wire colors to the existing harness and remove the old plug from the stock harness and put this one in? And run a new power wire?

honestly i forget how the factory harness is. i have had one wire alternators in 3 previous mustangs. I can look at mine if it helps

if i recall correctly you run a new power wire from the starter solenoid and tap in to one leg of the factory alternator harness

Is the 6g worth the extra 50? Like as in a 50.00 difference to just not have to modify the bracket or save 4lbs rotation?

you guys that have bought a 3g, what amperage is best to get? I see them all the way up to 250 amp...

I would say the 130 Amp is probably the best overall for the average Mustang.

Oh man...ya know...it's probably been a year to a year and a half since I bought it. I don't remember anymore. I checked my old history, but noting is jumping out. I just did a quick Ebay search though. There are litterally dozens to choose from on there.

Output current per RPM is more important than overall rating IMHO. Most folks want an alt that puts out decent current at idle, and some 200 amp units don't do that.

I agree with Shaker and others regarding the best choice - a big case (3G). 6G's don't put out as much total current.

If you are serious about going with a super high-output unit, note that the 6 rib belt becomes a limiting factor.

Unless you are powering the space shuttle, no need to go past 130a, especially on a simple car like a Mustang.

My daily driver has a 130a alt and powers much more like AC, heated seats, Navigation, HiDs, e-fan, 6-disk cd, etc etc without dimming the lights at all.

Just don't slap underdrivr pulleys on the car unless you run a tiny overdrive alt pulley

Just got response from ebay seller powermaxusa regarding their 160 amp alternator. They say it puts out 40% of the rated 160 amps at idle and 70amps ad idle with overdrive pully. Does this seem about right and would you guys recomend the od pulley?

3G's don't like to be spun over ~15K RPM. You can measure your crank pulley to determine if you'll overspin it with your current combo and shift points.

(crank diameter/alt diameter) * engine RPM

Could i install the 3G alternator and use the factory power wire converted to 1 wire? I know its best to run a new power wire but will need to get one made for me, but was wondering if i could use the factoiry power wire for the time being.

I know the kits exist, my main question was whether the factory wiring is capable of handling it for time until I run a new cable? Or is it a necessity to hav it? I will eventually make or purchase one, but for the initial install would it work.

Exile supplied a link for a product to help you out.

To be explicit, do not run a 3G from the stock power wire(s), not even for a week while waiting for a cable to arrive. If you're really in a pinch and the alt is already installed, some bulk cable (or a 4 AWG starter cable, cut to length), some terminals (parts store, home store, stereo shop, etc) and an inline fuse (parts store or stereo shop if sourced locally. Pep Boys and Napa used to stock big fuses and holders) could be used till the dedicated cable arrives.

In either situation, be sure the fuse rating is appropriate for the weakest link (usually the charge cable).

You posted this while I was pecking. As you can see, please don't do it at all. The upgraded cable is a necessity.

I would not even start a 3G car with the stock charge wires (even if I was standing there and going to shut the car off 5 seconds later).
