I would love to hear ideas that may help, I have a 83 GT its got a stock roller bottom end, out of a 88. The problem is i cannot pull any better than a 1.89 60 foot, the car has a set of ported e7s with stock valves,a e 303 cam,a steath dual plane intake and a electric fan, stock shorty headers, with a factory h pipe the cats have been gutted, a 750 vac secondary carb. 5 speed with 3.73s, nothing i have done has helped, i changed to a 600 and a 650 carb still 1.89 or 1.90 60 ft,the only change was i went from 8.32 @ 85.3 to a 8.35 @ 83.9. I have changed every jet, sqiurter, combination possible, more timing, less timing, 3500 rpms, even a valve floating 6300 rpms i haved tried to launch at, no luck. carb spacers, i cant even make enough power to break the 7.5 rear, the car is lazy out of the hole but runs like a bat out of hell from the 330 to the end of the eight mile. even tried 4degrees advanced on the came nothing there any one have any ideas please help.

maybe go with a hair shorter tire maybe like a 25 or 24 or go with 4.10's or numerically higher gears . sounds like your combo is consistant.

I have a aluminum flywheel and drive shaft, i really dont want 4.10s cause i like to drive it alot. I was thinking long tube headers would help low end torque i am wating to put in the flywheel and new clutch when i install a new exhaust system

I hope the flywheel helps the only reason I am swapping is to get rid of the stock 10 inch clutch and upgrade to the 10 and a half. I had to buy a flywheel anyway so I went with the aluminum one.

if you're hooking hard i'd consider subframe conn, or atleast some tq box reinforecements. my 84 only took so much then had to beef it up

or you could wait till your door shuts cockeyed

I'd say you need to launch harder. Get some suspension in that thing and you should see a 1.6 60' time easily, if that 7.5" rear holds up!

I cant launch any harder Its on the floor. My friend swears my ignition is weak and says I need a MSD box and If I ever get below 1.8 60fts I plan to install sub frames and a 8.8 I have already welded up My torque boxes.

It's all about weight transfer my friend. Stock suspension is adequate at best, but to get the full benefit, put some suspension in that's geared more toward drag racing if you're looking for every advantage. Some Lakewood 50/50 shocks, 70/30 struts, 4cyl springs, and control arms would make your car an entirely different beast at the drag strip. Some 90/10 struts would really let you transfer the weight to the rear, but IMO, they sacrifice drivability too much on the street.

Edit: Your friend is probably pretty off base in recommending the MSD thinking it'll help. If I recall correctly, the stock ignition will handle quite a bit, and the need for the aftermarket ignition is negated at your current power level. Now if you were boosted, I could see where he was coming from because of the risk of incomplete combustion from blowing out the spark, but on a mild N/A engine, it's a waste. On a side note, you were definitely wise in reinforcing the torque boxes ahead of time, so your car will thank you for it in the end. The 8.8 isn't a bad idea either since the 7.5 isn't known for its strength.

Try some horsepower. The 60' could be a little better , but what kind of 60' do you think you should be putting down with those number's? 1.80's aint all that bad for an 8.30's car.

I dont need suspension work no one is listening I said the car dead hooks, I dont need weight transfer I dont have a traction problem, i basically have a off idle miss, and The car should be in the mid 1.7 60ft zone, my 93 pulls 1.73 60 ft all day long, the 83 is lighter, it should be faster, it just bogs for a split second when the clutch is released.

We're listening perfectly clear. If you're hooking and bogging, you need to raise your launch RPM to counteract that. There's still a fundamental difference between hooking and transferring weight however, and the suspension would help the 60' time, which is what the original question was, if i'm not mistaken?

He says he launches the car at 6300 RPM and it still bogs and then goes... His problems sound like the car wants to go (suspension and tires stick) but the motor isnt letting it happen.

If you hadent already mentioned messing with the carb thats exactly where I would have told you to look. The ignition is another place that could be hurting you as well. Sounds like the car is moving for the mods, and with a lower 1.7 or even a 1.6 60' you could aqueak out an 8.0!

Just curiuos what kinda track you are running at? Is it prepped with VHT? My car also bogs off the line at a properly prepared track. Never on the street where you can break the tires loose. I believe the term for it is driveline bog. It is because your tires plant. Sounds to me like you have enough traction for more hp. The reason i believe you are bogging is because you are making less HP then your traction can handle. If that makes sense to you.
