Why do Grand Prix try to race me?

GTP's are as fast or faster than 87-98 Mustang V8's. Throw on a couple of bolt-on's and they'll blow away 99+ GT's. There's nothing to really make fun of.

The stock GTP (supercharged Grand Prix) puts out 260 bhp, weighs 3583 lbs, has a 3.29 gear ratio, and runs the 1/4 mile in 15.0 seconds. It will take more than a couple bolt-ons to "blow away" a stock 99+ GT, which runs 14.3 in the 1/4 mile.

There was a 2000 GTP at the local track last month running 15.5 all night long. I owned him. I personally think they are pretty nice cars. I've been thinking of one for the family car. Not a race car though. My stang is still #1.

I too like the looks of the GTP for a family car. And its probably that type of car that it should be racing.

this thread is funny. :D

i can never get races here, and i've yet to race a 99+ GT. :(

carry on. :)

Since your a GTP guy, what does a simple pulley swap do for the 1/4-mile times? I'm thinking that with a pulley swap, cool weather, and a good driver, a GTP would take a stock '99-up.

Wow, I just walked a GTP last night on my way to a rib joint to get a bite to eat, and then I see this thread.

Nice kill! There seems to be more and more GTPs on the road. They need to know their place in the food chain. They will not beat a 99+ GT unless they do major mods, assuming the GT is stock.

It's hard to say exactly because the pulley swap was my last mod to do after the other stuff. My car seems to be a freak, but I ran the time below with just a pulley swap, home depot-style intake, new plugs/wires, 180* tstat, and some exhaust work. Now, most of the time they won't hit as good, but the mods I've done get most GTPs into the high to upper-mid 13's.

Stock for stock a 99+ GT should win everytime. But since I've only spent about $400ish in perf. stuff, I say I'm making out pretty well so far. A stock GTP does about 6-7psi of boost on the stock 3.8" pulley. I'm pushing about 9-10psi now.

The things to watch out for now are the turbo kits that are being released. 1 guy hit 12.2@115 with 10lbs of boost, and another guy hit 12.7@112 with 8lbs (neither I/C'd). Street trim and all.

watch out for turbo v6 stangs too. low 12's, high 11's on stock engine. there are few people startin to make kits

14.2 @ 96mph stock. I wouldn't speak so cocky.

This is still much better than a stock GTP at 15.0 seconds. I would imagine that the GTP needs to add another 40-50 rwhp to be competitive with a stock GT. By the way, I started this thread because I've run into too many cocky Grand Prix (not just GTP) owners who try to race out of their league. For example, a regular Grand Prix puts out 200 bhp and runs the quarter-mile in 16.2 seconds. Do they really think that its going to be a driver's race with a car that's 2 seconds faster in the quarter-mile? It's time for a serious reality check.

.... Chaos was referring to a GTP when he said 14.2 stock

There is an internet site that records 0-60 mph times and 1/4 times for most cars: www.ssmoparmuscle.com. I have found them to be fairly accurate. For a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Comp., they list 6.6 seconds for 0-60 mph and 15.00 seconds for the 1/4 mile. This is a definite improvement from the regular Grand Prix which is listed as 8.1 seconds for 0-60 mph and 16.20 seconds for the 1/4 mile.

For a 1999 Mustang GT, this same website lists the following statistics: 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 14.10 seconds. Again, it appears that a stock GTP is out of its league with a stock GT.

An FYI, the '04 GTPs are heavier than the '97-03 version. Most stock GTPs run mid-to-high 14s stock. The N/A versions (3.8Ls) run mid to high 15s (like V6 'stangs) and can break into the 14s with some god mods. And like most cars, we have our lemons (both good and bad) that run great and others that run like ****.

I've also seen stock GTs also run 14.9s, so that's why I NEVER go by magazines for times. Like any factory FI car, never underestimate them. Like I said earlier, stock for stock, a 99+ GT should take a 97-03 GTP, but that's not always the case. The run I ran my 13.5, I beat a LS1 T/A that ran a 13.65.

No one ever wants to go with me. Sometimes I initiate and still nothing happens. :fuss:

I can understand why no one wants to race a Cobra, Corvette, or Viper. It's because the race will be a total embarassment. It's futile to race cars that are totally out of your league. That's why I don't understand why family cars and ricers want to race the Mustang GT. I don't have the problem with ricers that other stangers have, but I do have problems with Grand Prix. Typically, it is some young kid driving an older Grand Prix. For whatever reason, he has it in his mind that his car is unbeatable. Perhaps he has been racing ricers or minivans. So, he pulls up alongside my convertible GT and does the speed-up and slow-down game luring me to race. I usually take the bait leaving him in the dust. You would hope that he would pass the word to his little Grand Prix buddies that Mustang GTs are faster than ricers and minivans and that its futile to race them. I can only hope.

Back in the day when I was stuck in a little 2.3L stang I raced cars that I knew were faster than me. I did it because I wanted to see them run and see just how fast they were compared to my slow POS. I realize that a lot of the people out there ARE retards who really think they're fast, but maybe some of them are actually just having fun for the hell of it, eh?

I do have a friend who does this with his 2004 Cadillac STS. He just wants to see how fast the other car is. I doubt that the kids I run into are that sophisticated.
