Why I hate coil spring compressors...

I have the basic internal kind shown above. I even bought the pipe connectors to use for spacers.

H.. I took the same inner compressor on a set of Bb springs.

Start with the last point where the hooks will turn into the ends of the springcoils
unwind the bolt so it is just threaded thru the lower hooks,
push the top down and get the spacer sized to remove all slack.

Chrank'r down....

It will make them small enough to fit without banging on anything.

Hint...turn your spring ends to the pockets while you unwind it.

That is if your using an impact.

nope. You can't remove or install the perches while the springs are in anyway.

I did mine without removing the spring

Tip - always chain the spring into the car.

you cannot remove the perch without removing the spring or at least compressing the spring enough to raise it off the perch. In HHstang's case, he was asking if the perches needed to be removed to take out the spring, and the answer is no. He would, for all practical purposes, have to remove the spring to remove the perch, so its a moot point. Additionally, the perches do not need to be removed to re-install the spring, but the perches do need to be installed prior to installing the spring, if they are to be removed or replaced.

I have a Friend that was too lazy to remove the spring to replace the broken perch.
He just used the compressor fixed to the top of the shocktower and compressed the spring to remove it.

But.........When he was installing the new perch, he was trying to work it back in, and the hook on the top slipped.


Now we call him Jay 3Fingers.

It's best to be safe than sorry.

Thanks guys. I'm as cautious as a person can be, but thanks again for the reminder. I am attempting to get the springs in and out without removing the perches if I don't have to. I did try this tonight and even with the air impact wrench, I couldn't relieve enough tension to get spring out. Any thoughts on my problem?

Popping the lower ball joint will help. swing the spindle out to lower the upper arm more and pull the spring out.

You can make your own with an old shock and a piece of threaded rod. Cut off the lower shock mount that bolts to the perch. Drill out the center and weld in a piece of threaded rod long enough to go from the spring perch through your shock cap and have about 6-8 inches left. Place a large thick washer or steel plate on top of the cap and lube the rod and start tightening until you can pull to one side and let pressure off. It sounds like the same thing a few people was talking about buying off of ebay.

I am not sure how that would work for our cars? How would you get it under the spring....or does one end just slip in between the spring coils?
