I have a 1992 lx convert 5.0, it is slow and need some cheap ideas on different set-ups for making this thing not so embarrassing.. I use to roll chevy's but now I have seen the light and realized that those cars are garbage.. I am looking for ideas on gear set-ups, intake, exahust, computer and other upgrades to make this thing break the 17's.. It does have a new trans (AOD) with a 2200-2600 stall converter and stage 2 shift kit.. I got beat up by a 300c on the way home the other night, BAD!

Search around, you will find tons of stuff on here. Look in the stickies, there is a dyno/drag time thread with the combo that netted the numbers listed. Gears, Bolt-ons, tires, heads/cam/intake...it all depends on how much $$$ you wanna spend.

this thing won't even break the 17 inch cobra wheels loose the motor revs good but falls on it's rear when i bring it up on the stall like the computer is retarting the timing? I have rebuilt the transmission on thousands of the fox 5.0 with the same combo and they were awsome. is just cause it's my 1st ford????? am i being punished for driving a camaro for the last 13 years? it's all bone stock with h-pipe mac short headers and a ford racing air intake just picked up a e303 cam and a 3.73 what kind of old steel heads flo good with the stock upper and lower and fuel system..

Well nothing rude, but first off you have a convertible and second it's an automatic. That's not really the combination that will put you ahead to fast. My dad use to complain about his vette being slow, well it was convertible and an auto as well that thing use to get stomped on. The mustang auto tranny robs power fairly well.

First thing I would do is put a 5-speed in that thing or a C-6 tranny if you want an automatic. Then start building a good engine combo and put a s/c or turbo on it. Then you'll be the one stomping them!!!!

just my .02, but what do I know....

if it cant break the tires loose youve got a problem.

put some 4.10s in it to start, check your fuel pressure, and make sure your timing is set correctly, start at 10* Before top dead center and go up from there, ususally guys run at 14* with premium fuel and dont run into any detonation.

Sorry... sorry...

Just a heads up, street racing is not condoned here. Usually talk of street racing results in flaming and threads being locked.

1. 4.10 gears (an aluminum driveshaft would be recommended, cuts down on highway vibration)
2. Shift kit
3. Higher stall torque converter
4. GT40P heads (requires specific shorty headers due to plug angle)
5. Explorer intake manifold
6. Subframe Connectors (a MUST for ANY 'vert)
7. Drop-in K&N panel air filter
8. Timing set to 12 or 14* BTDC
9. Full exhaust (headers, high-flow or NO cats, and a good cat-back)
10. Electric fan conversion with 3G alternator upgrade

That should get you well on the way to making that car feel right.

Yeah really. Even my wife insisted we get rid of the auto that was in HER car! Did a 5 speed swap and never looked back!

most verts that ive seen have 2.73's in the pumpkin, some 3.73's or 4.10's would help.

well it needs tuned bad is my first guess. check for vacum leaks. my combo on mine is just explorer upper and lower, BBK cai, bbk shortys, catless x pipe, flowmaster dumped, 3.73's, B&M shift kit. and mine has no problem breaking the 285's lose. mine is a convert as well.
when i first got my car back together after doing the intake swap i thought what pos. its slower then before! i had major vacum leaks and timming issues. with those all fixed it runs alot better. and i think for a aod car with a stock stall and the few things thats done to my car being able to break them lose from a roll is respectable.

if all else falses for you throw a 100 shot on it and go have fun. heads and cam in the works for me. like 15 more days till ima start on it! then some boost via s single turbo set up.

but really. having the cam id go strap it on a dyno and have it tuned. i cant wait to get mine tuned.

Wow, alot of bashing on the vert automatics...they're not all that bad. I got mine to run an even 13 in the 1/4 without the nitrous & mid 12's with an 80 shot. Your stall converter & shift kit are fine. I think you may have some other problems if you can break the tires loose or beat an escort. I'd have it checked.

Besides that, I agree with Darkwriter77's list. Upgrade your heads, cam, intake & exhaust setup.

I hate how people say the first mod you should do to an AOD car is to get rid of it, I'm not a huge fan, and if he was hinting at going that way, that's ok, but the guy is obviously having issues somewhere other than the transmission if he's doing a 17 second quarter. I'd do a compression check on all the cylinders for starters
